These days, it seems like it’s Hollywood law that every celebrity has a social media account of some sort. However, late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek never followed that rule.
In fact, he thought that having a social media account would be a disservice to the game show’s fans. Of course, this is subjective. Chances are that if Trebek ever did start a Twitter or Instagram account, Jeopardy! watchers would love to hear how he spends his days off-air.
Maybe he would share moments of peace with his pets like talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Or, perhaps he would show appreciation for his fans like country star Billy Ray Cyrus.
Whatever Trebek would have shared with us, we know everyone would have welcomed him into the online realm.
Trebek Gives Ironic Reason to His Social Media Abstinence
As the face of America’s favorite trivia show, Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek knew a lot of little facts about a variety of subjects that not many others know. From arts and literature to science and sports history, Trebek had a wealth of knowledge and an eye for detail. That’s why the reason behind Trebek’s past hesitation to join social media is so ironic.
In an interview with USA Today, Trebek shared, “For me, it’s a waste of time. I’m not going to take your time with trivial, insignificant details of my life.”
The fact, alone, that Trebek used the word “trivial” in his answer is pretty funny. Because of the show, Trebek headed the largest community of trivia fanatics, but he worried the details of his own life were too nonsensical.
Whether this was another instance of Trebek’s dry humor or serious response, it’s safe to say fans of Jeopardy! would have enjoyed seeing selfies or reading midday updates and thoughts. However, we’ll just have to settle for what we know and heard about Trebek from the show’s social media pages.
Alex Trebek Discussed Shaving His Mustache
We’d like to think that if Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek ever did have an Instagram or Twitter, one of his posts would be a #ThrowbackThursday of a photo of him with his mustache.
Twenty years ago, Trebek’s mustache was the staple of his image. So, in 2001, when he suddenly decided to opt without it, no one could stop talking about his new, fresh face.
“I decided on a whim between taping shows that day,” Trebek told USA Today. “I was amazed at the reaction out there. There was a lot of turmoil going on in the world, and yet the big thing was Alex Trebek’s mustache.”
Of course, the same year, the 9/11 attacks occurred—a tragedy that cut our nation to the core for years to come. But in moments like these, people are desperate for comic relief. The silly, trivial fact that Trebek shaved his mustache gave fans a glimmer of happiness in an otherwise trying time. Perhaps that’s why so many fans of celebrities are so invested in their social media pages.
