After a series of various guest hosts, “Jeopardy!” has finally found its person to replace Alex Trebek as the permanent host. And fans are in for not one but two hosts for the upcoming season.
Both producer Mike Richards and “Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik will host “Jeopardy” full time moving forward. For weeks, rumors have heavily pinpointed Richards, who worked behind the scenes, as Trebek’s next successor. But Bialik’s name comes as a bit of a surprise.
Richards will be the primary host for “Jeopardy!” going forward. But Bialik will act as its host for both primetime and also spin-off specials as well. According to The Wrap, both Richards and Bialik will move into their new roles effective immediately. Both were previously guest-hosts on the show.
Sony Pictures Chairman prepared an official statement for the announcement.
“We are thrilled to begin the next chapter of America’s Favorite Quiz Show ith Mike hosting our daily show and Mayim hosting new versions of ‘Jeopardy!,’” said Ravi Ahuja, Chairman of Global Television Studios and Corporate Development for Sony Pictures. “We took this decision incredibly seriously. A tremendous amount of work and deliberation has gone into it. Perhaps more than has ever gone into the selection of hosts for a show – deservedly so because it’s ‘Jeopardy!’ and we are following the incomparable Alex Trebek. A senior group of Sony Pictures Television executives pored over footage from every episode, reviewed research from multiple panels and focus groups. And got valuable input from our key partners and ‘Jeopardy!’ viewers.”
‘Jeopardy!’ Finds Its New Host
Mike Richards probably wasn’t most people’s first choice for Alex Trebek’s successor. Many had former “Jeopardy” champ, Ken Jennings, for the position. Jennings held the highest ratings during his six weeks as guest host. Others wanted LeVar Burton to take the lead. Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers heavily campaigned for the position.
But Richards managed to hold the second-highest ratings, a 5.9 rating to Jennings’ 6.0. He was also the second person to guest host as well. Richards also has the closest ties to the show outside of Jennings. He joined “Jeopardy!” a few months before Trebek died as game show host.
In the game show world, Richards has had a number of experiences hosting. For instance, he hosted “High School Reunion” and “Beauty and the Geek” on the CW. He also acted as a co-executive producer on “The Price as Right” as well. Although he garnered controversy in that position. In total, Richards has worked on more than 4,000 hours in the game show industry.
Although she’s mainly known for her sitcom world, Bialik also proved to be fan favorite when she guest hosted “Jeopardy!” earlier this year.
