Alex Trebek was a widely familiar face. He had been the beloved and charismatic host of “Jeopardy!” since 1984.
During his time as host, he had racked up over 8,200 episodes during the 37 seasons he hosted.
Besides his career of being the best quiz show host on television, Trebek was also a family man. He was first married to Elaine Callei in 1974, but they eventually divorced in 1981.
After that, he met his wife Jean Currivan who was a real-estate manager from New York. The couple had two children together, Matthew and Emily. The two were married all the way until Trebek passed away from pancreatic cancer in November.
Here’s everything there is to know about Trebek’s beloved wife.
Jean is now a professional sound healer, Reiki master, and Religious Science practitioner for over 10 years. The couple had a 24-year age gap and met at a party in 1988. The two remained friends for a bit before becoming romantically involved due to that age gap.
According to Newsweek, she used her skills in sound healing and Religious Science to keep herself uplifted while Trebek was going through cancer. She is a deeply spiritual and religious person.
“It comes from a place of love, because I want to uplift him…and when I keep my own self buoyed and enjoying my life, I can actually share that with him. He can look at me and have a sense of ‘life is beautiful, my wife is doing something good,'” Jean Trebek said to SurvivorNet.
Trebek often said he was more introverted when he first came to Hollywood. He never really liked to go out to clubs. Trebek often referred to his wife as his soulmate and his one regret was not getting to meet her sooner.
“I’m pretty satisfied with my life, but my wife Jean and I have been together almost 29 years, and I was thinking about President [George H. W.] Bush when he died, and all the comments about his life about what a nice guy he is, and how he and his wife had been together 73 years. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, if I’d just met Jean in my 20s we could have had a longer life together,'” Alex Trebek said to People.
Even when they were married, Jean and Alex Trebek desribed themselves as homebodies. They would rather sit and watch a movie than go out clubbing.
Jean Trebek and Alex Trebek on His Last Day
Luckily, Trebek got to spend his last day next to his wife Jean.
“Even in his book, he described that he wanted his final day to be sitting on the swing next to his wife Jean, kind of watching the horizon, and he got to do that. He was coherent, he wasn’t in pain, and the fact that he had a nice final day makes all of us in the Jeopardy! family feel that much better,” Mike Richards said, according to Oprah Magazine.
The two had always felt comfortable with each other. During their first date, Trebek took her home for dinner. She was nervous but said he was casual and down to Earth.
Jean was supportive of his career all the way up until the end of his life. Although she once asked him to take a break, Jean also understood how much the show gave to him.
“But I know it’s what feeds him. He loves doing Jeopardy! He has his own family over there. They are such a close-knit, beautiful group of people. I think that gives him a lot of support. A sense of purpose and that he’s just not in bed and can be productive,” Jean Trebek said to Good Morning America.
All in all, Jean Trebek and Alex Trebek were a team and fully supportive of each other. Each of them had their separate careers, but had always been supportive of the other’s dreams.
