The results are in… and Bill Whitaker’s debut as the guest host on “Jeopardy!” was a success. The “60 Minutes” journalist seems to have passed the social media test with flying colors. Fans liked everything from his voice to his calm disposition.
The good news for Aaron Rodgers, Ken Jennings, and others who wish to land the permanent job is that Bill Whitaker hasn’t thrown his hat in that ring quite yet. And, to be fair, it seems that fans have responded positively to the majority of the guest hosts thus far. The exception, of course, being Dr. Oz. He was received so poorly that a petition to have him removed gained steam on the internet.
All of that aside, Whitaker didn’t quite know what he was getting into when stepped into the “Jeopardy!” ring.
“I have been really blown away by the coverage this all gets. I truly did think, silly me, that I was going to be a Jeopardy! guest host and carry on with my life as usual,” Whitaker told The Washington Post in a recent interview. “But these hosts: They’re gossiped about, they’re tweeted about, they’re in People magazine, the Hollywood Reporter. I’m going, ‘Oh my God, I had no idea that this was going to be this wild and crazy.’”
Well, buckle up, Bill. Because the world of fan-favorite trivia game shows is way more high stakes than the hard-hitting journalism of “60 Minutes.” Okay… maybe not. But still, the fans can be brutal, and they hold each host to the standard of Alex Trebek. Needless to say, Bill had his work cut out for him.
The ‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Pass Judgement
When the internet speaks, TV networks listen. So passing the Twitter test will be an important litmus for any aspiring host. And while Bill Whitaker may not be pursuing the permanent gig, that doesn’t mean people will keep their thoughts to themselves. Let’s see what they had to say about Whitaker’s debut.
You’ll sleep peacefully knowing that Danny’s Jeopardy Corner gives Bill Whitaker’s performance two thumbs up. In fact, you’ll sleep peacefully just by listening to the man host the show, according to Terry at least.
Bill’s smooth voice has its share of detractors, of course. Maybe soothing voices and peaceful sleep aren’t quite the vibe that “Jeopardy!” fans are looking for. Whitney certainly wasn’t impressed.
But despite Whitney’s criticism, the overwhelming amount of chatter seemed to approve Bill Whitaker’s efforts. In fact, it was actually difficult to find negative comments. And the few that are out there either echoed Whitney’s sentiments or were completely indifferent.
