“Jeopardy!” has remained a staple in American pop culture for over 40 years— and it seems like that’s not changing anytime soon. Fans may have lost longtime host Alex Trebek, but the show will continue on.

After Trebek passed away in November, the show is actively seeking his replacement while working its way through a list of celebrity guest hosts. The show has featured various people behind the podium, from football stars to former “Jeopardy!” contestants.

Some fans now suggest that “Jeopardy!” think outside the box when choosing future guest hosts. On Sunday, “Jeopardy!” fans sounded off on Twitter by pitching the guest hosts they’d be most excited to see on the game show. The results were hilarious.

Late Sunday night, screenwriter Michael Schur began the trend when he tweeted: “Who’s someone they could give the “Jeopardy!” hosting gig to that would make you watch every episode, every day, never missing a single second? I’ll start.” In the tweet, he included a photo of filmmaker Werner Herzog. The German director is known for his slow cadence and accent.

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Sound off With Weird, Wacky Suggestions for Host

After Shur’s tweet, “Jeopardy!” fans quickly responded with their suggestions. While some were sincere pitches, many were outrageous. From mascots to actors to fans even pitching themselves, the trend soon blew up.

As for celebrities, users suggested actor Paul Mooney, singer-songwriter Tom Waits, and fan-favorite Sam Elliot. This is where things took an odd turn: fans then started pitching mascots take their turn behind the famous lectern. They reasoned that no human host could ever replace Trebek and suggested fictional mascots instead. Some suggested a Sesame Street character while others pitched the Philadelphia mascot Gritty.

For now, fans can look forward to seeing CNN anchor and journalist Anderson Cooper take on the gig. This week, “Jeopardy” welcomed him as their 6th guest host, following NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“Whoever leads this show forward, there’s certainly big shoes to fill,” Cooper said in an interview. “And I know whoever becomes the host of this show, they’re going to carry on Alex’s legacy.”

For now, the show does not intend to name a new permanent host until the end of this season, and it may or may not be one of the guest hosts fans will see on the show. After Cooper, “60 Minutes” co-host Bill Whitaker, former “Big Bang” star Mayim Bialik and “TODAY” show anchor Savannah Guthrie will get their chance at hosting the classic quiz show.
