‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Robin Roberts: Remembering Her Time on ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’

by Thad Mitchell

With George Stephonopolous wrapping up his tenure last week, the ever-popular game show “Jeopardy!” will have a new host this week.

Taking over the “Jeopardy!” host’s lectern this week is Stephonopolous colleague Robin Roberts. The two television personalities co-host ABC’s “Good Morning America” alongside former NFL star Michael Strahan. Roberts will begin her guest-hosting tenure with tomorrow’s (Monday) brand new episode. The 60-year-old Roberts has plenty of on-screen experience and began her broadcast career in the world of sports. She is most known for her time with sports network ESPN, where she worked as an on-air talent for 15 years.

Though it will be her first time hosting the show, Robin Roberts is no stranger to how “Jeopardy! is played. In a recent interview she called serving as host of the show a “bucket list” item. She also appears on the show as a contestant on an edition of “Celebrity Jeopardy!” where she squares off with other notable public figures.

Her appearance on the show came in 1999 and she faced fellow sports broadcasters Bob Costas and Keith Olberman. She was working for ESPN as a broadcaster at the time of her appearance on the show. Costas took home the win that night. Roberts jokes that she is surprised to be hosting given her poor performance on the celebrity episode of the show. She lost her points on the last clue of the episode when she couldn’t come up with the correct answer to an ice hockey clue.

‘Jeopardy!’ Preparing for New Host

Speaking with Ellen Degeneres earlier this year, she says she’s happy to have the opportunity to redeem herself.

“I knew I was not destined to be a guest host because I was on Celebrity Jeopardy!,” Roberts recalls. “I was so bad as a guest, that I think that if I had been on the list, that anybody who remembers me from being on the celebrity show, they knew that.”

Now, Robin Roberts will get her shot at redemption as she steps behind the iconic “Jeopardy!” podium. She is the latest in a series of celebrities that have taken on guest host responsibilities since the passing of Alex Trebek. The legendary game show host manned the host’s podium for 37 years and has a big hand in making “Jeopardy!” the success it is today. Trebek passed away late last year at the age of 80 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

“Jeopardy!” introduced its fans to Robin Roberts via social media on Saturday. Roberts will be raising money for a special foundation during her tenure.

“Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts is guest hosting this week!” the Instagram post proclaims. “As part of her appearance, Jeopardy! will donate to her chosen charity, Be The Match.”
