On Saturday, Jeopardy! posted an exclusive interview with guest host Savannah Guthrie where she opened up about the game show’s iconic host Alex Trebek.

Trebek was at the helm of Jeopardy! for almost four decades. He was a staple on the popular quiz show beginning in 1984, and became a household name for many. For 37 seasons, Trebek graced the set of Jeopardy! with intelligence, wit, and humor, which played a huge part in the game show’s success.

Ever since the legendary host passed away in November 2020, the game show hasn’t quite felt the same. It’s hard to replace someone like Trebek overnight. Jeopardy! has the tough task of finding his successor, and is still on the search for its new full-time host.

As of now, the game show is still utilizing celebrity guest hosts like Guthrie who recently shared her thoughts about Trebek before her debut appearance tonight. When getting ready to host the show, Guthrie looked at Trebek and his legacy for inspiration.

“I think what I tried to do is I tried to approach it like I approach my job, which is to be prepared. To study hard, to care a lot, to work hard. I think that’s what Alex Trebek did every day,” Guthrie shared. “I really admire how much excellence he brought to it even though he did it decade after decade after decade. It seems to me he never slacked off, it never got easy for him. He always brought his A-game, and that’s the spirit I was trying to emulate.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Says She Regrets Never Getting to Meet Alex Trebek

During the same interview, Savannah Guthrie shared further thoughts on Alex Trebek. She revealed that one of her biggest regrets involves not ever getting to meet Trebek before he passed.

Every guest host who takes over Jeopardy! seems to be motivated by Trebek’s spirit and lingering presence in the studio. It’s an inevitable question to be asked about the late host and sized up against him. While no one will ever truly replace Trebek, each interim host is trying to carry the torch with respect and pride for the position.

While speaking about Jeopardy! and its longtime host, Guthrie admitted she didn’t ever have the honor of actually meeting Trebek. Yet like many others out there, the Today show anchor said she would’ve jumped at the opportunity to meet him.

“That’s one of the regrets of my life. I never got to meet Alex Trebek,” Guthrie said in the interview. “I would have loved to meet him. But now that I’ve met all the folks who worked with him so closely, I know everything I’ve ever heard about him is 100% true. He was a class act and a gentleman.”
