‘Jeopardy!’ Guest-Host Savannah Guthrie Confesses She’s Not Interested in Hosting Show Full-Time: ‘I Have a Day Job’

While some celebrities have made their interest in Jeopardy!‘s opening for a full-time host known, upcoming guest host Savannah Guthrie isn’t interested.

On Wednesday, the 49-year-old Today anchor shared her thoughts about her new interim gig. She spoke with PEOPLE (The TV SHOW!) about her experiences on the game show. In addition, she readily admitted she wouldn’t be vying for the permanent job. Guthrie revealed she was thrilled to be part of Jeopardy!, but knows how difficult it will be for the next host to replace iconic host Alex Trebek.

“I was so nervous because I really just wanted to show how much respect I have for Jeopardy! and Alex – who is a legend and an icon for a reason,” Guthrie told PEOPLE (The TV SHOW!). “He’s the maestro. And I know those Jeopardy! fans are picky. But I have to say, I’m just the fill-in so don’t worry!”

Guthrie is one of many celebrity interims that have taken over the podium since Trebek passed away in November 2020. They’ve brought in television stars, football players, broadcasters, and even former Jeopardy! champions to host temporarily. However, no permanent host has been selected as of yet. For the celebrities looking to take over the game show, they’ve got one less person to worry about though.

“I’m doing a couple of weeks. I loved it. I had so much fun, but I have a day job,” Guthrie explained.

Guthrie’s two-week stint as the guest host of Jeopardy! begins next week and lasts from June 14 to June 25. Guest hosts George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, LeVar Burton, and others will then take a crack at running the game show.

‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Says Next Host Has ‘Big Shoes to Fill’

Savannah Guthrie just celebrated her 10th anniversary of being on the Today show earlier this week. While she’s happy with her day job and not looking to take over Jeopardy!, the anchor does hope some of the knowledge she picked up on the game show sticks with her. If anything just so she can impress friends and colleagues at parties.

“I was a terrible student until much later in life so there’s just so much I don’t know in general. But, what I learned was how smart everyone at Jeopardy! is – especially the contestants and the writers,” Guthrie said. “However, I studied really hard. I read everything ahead of time and I hope some of those facts stay in my head so I can impress people at cocktail parties.”

The broadcaster is under no illusions as to how difficult it will be to fill Alex Trebek‘s shoes either. She called the longtime host “legendary,” but also said she thought Jeopardy! has some great candidates available to choose from.

“I think it’s such big shoes to fill!” she exclaimed. “Alex was not only legendary in how he did it, he was legendary in how he conducted himself off-air and the family that he created. [He was] such a revered figure. So, stepping into Alex’s shoes won’t be easy, but I think they’ve got some really good candidates. I’m not going to name names.”
