‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Savannah Guthrie ‘Could Never Be a Contestant’ Because of Lack of Trivia Skills

by Chris Haney

On Saturday, Jeopardy! shared an exclusive interview with new guest host Savannah Guthrie where she amusingly admitted she wouldn’t be a very good contestant on the game show.

Guthrie’s two-week stint as interim host begins tomorrow evening. She’ll be taking the reins of the game show from June 14 to June 25. The Today show co-anchor is following numerous other celebrity guest hosts who have made appearances since longtime host Alex Trebek’s death. Jeopardy! has used a rotating cast of temporary hosts while they still search for a full-time hire.

While Guthrie has been open about not wanting to quit her day job, she has shared her love for the game show and for Trebek. She recently opened up about her experience filming on set. The anchor says all of her family and friends, and even her co-workers, love Jeopardy!. Guthrie is thrilled to host the quiz show, but she did have a confession to make. Since she isn’t the strongest trivia player, Guthrie admits she’d be terrible as a contestant.

“Well, I’m a huge fan of Jeopardy!, and I know I could never be a contestant because I’m not very good at trivia. So this was the closest I was ever going to get to the Jeopardy! stage, so I had to jump at the chance,” Guthrie explained.

‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Won’t Be Taking Over the Game Show Full-Time

During a separate interview, Savannah Guthrie spoke about how much she’s enjoyed her time on Jeopardy!. She also made it very clear she’s not on the hunt for a new job. That’s good news to other celebrities like LaVar Burton and Aaron Rodgers who have publicly made their interest in the job well known.

Yet those that want Alex Trebek’s longtime job will have one less candidate to compete against for the gig. Guthrie has already taken her name out of the running. She’s happy as a Today show anchor and doesn’t care to move on from her beloved job anytime soon.

“I was so nervous because I really just wanted to show how much respect I have for Jeopardy! and Alex – who is a legend and an icon for a reason,” Guthrie told PEOPLE. “He’s the maestro. And I know those Jeopardy! fans are picky. But I have to say, I’m just the fill-in so don’t worry!”

As Jeopardy! presses forward with its search for a new permanent host, it continues to bring in numerous celebrities as interims. The game show is using a variety of celebrities from all across the entertainment industry.

Jeopardy! invited television stars, journalists, an NFL quarterbackformer champions on the game show and more. Even though the interims help bridge the gap as the show finds its next full-time host, their appearances are also a bit of a tryout for those that are interested in the position. Although a permanent replacement hasn’t been picked yet, at a minimum we know at least one guest host who won’t be taking the job.

“I’m doing a couple of weeks. I loved it. I had so much fun, but I have a day job,” Guthrie explained.
