During a recent Jeopardy! exclusive interview, interim host Bill Whitaker shared some advice for contestants of the popular game show.
The 60 Minutes journalist is taking over as guest host starting on Monday night. Whitaker will take the reins from his fellow television anchor Anderson Cooper, whose hosting duties ended on Friday. As Whitaker takes over the role for the next two weeks, he’s now shared his thoughts on his love for the game show.
Whitaker and his wife frequently watch Jeopardy! together and try their best to collectively answer each clue. He calls Jeopardy! the couple’s “favorite show” and says they watch every night he’s home. In addition, he admits they often get the questions wrong, but that they love playing along regardless.
That’s why Whitaker says he admires Jeopardy!‘s contestants. He calls them “amazing” and is in awe of their intelligence on such a vast array of topics.
“I don’t understand how they do what they do,” Whitaker says of the Jeopardy! contestants. “It’s really amazing.”
Whitaker also shared some tips for interested contestants. In his opinion, reading, watching the news, and keeping up with current events may give you a leg up on the competition.
“Just read. Be involved, be engaged. Watch the news, watch 60 Minutes. Know what’s going on in the world. I think that’s what makes you a good contestant,” he explained.
‘Jeopardy!’: How and When to Watch Bill Whitaker’s Guest Hosting Debut
Later this evening, journalist Bill Whitaker will take over as Jeopardy! guest host. It will be the debut episode of his two-week stint on the game show.
Whitaker will take the Jeopardy! host’s podium for the first time tonight. His first episode airs on NBC at 7 p.m. EST. Fans can visit Jeopardy!’s website to find their local TV stations and channels. Additionally, viewers can also watch the popular quiz show via live stream on services like Fubo TV.
The 60 Minutes correspondent recently shared his excitement for his role as interim host. Whitaker is one of many celebrities to fill in for longtime Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek after he passed away in November. Other celebrity guest hosts include former champion Ken Jennings, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and fellow journalist Katie Couric.
In a recent interview, Whitaker said the Jeopardy! guest-hosting spotlight stunned him. The gig garners plenty of interest, which he simply did not expect.
“I have been really blown away by the coverage this all gets,” Whitaker said to the Washington Post recently. “I truly did think, silly me, that I was going to be a Jeopardy! guest host and carry on with my life as usual. But these hosts: They’re gossiped about, they’re tweeted about, they’re in People magazine, the Hollywood Reporter. I’m going, ‘Oh my God, I had no idea that this was going to be this wild and crazy.’”
