Former “Jeopardy!” contestant, champion and guest host Buzzy Cohen is widely considered one of the game show’s most popular contestants.
With his superior intellect, robust sense of humor and quirky charm, Cohen also became a favorite of the late Alex Trebek during his run. Trebek even gave the “Jeopardy!” champ a nickname, deeming him “Mr. Personality” for his outgoing ways. Cohen would often sacrifice additional winnings in Final Jeopardy! just to get Trebek to crack a smile. Knowing he had a win locked up, he would write funny messages during the Final Jeopardy! clue. “What is once more Trebek…once more?” is one of those funny lines that drew a laugh from the late host. This video shows just how loose Cohen played the game and the affection he drew from Trebek.
As you can see from the video, Trebek was happy to play along with Cohen’s antics. Away from the “Jeopardy!” limelight, Buzzy Cohen is a pretty regular guy with a wife and kids. His family is often a source of inspiration to him as he brings a sense of humor to social media to draw a few laughs. In a Saturday social media post, he says his 2-year-old is an “innovator” with an odd condiment choice for fruit.
“My 2-year-old dipped a slice of cantaloupe into ketchup and ate it,” he says in the Twitter post. “Said it was delicious. Family of innovators.”
‘Jeopardy!’ Champion Buzzy Cohen’s Game Show Prowess
While Buzzy Cohen’s child may or may not reach the great “Jeopardy!” heights his father did, the kid is certainly not afraid to try new things. That being said, I do not advise you to try this food and condiment mixture.
Cohen’s first run on “Jeopardy!” came in 2016 when he won nine matches in a row, accumulating well over $100,000 in winnings. He would return in 2017 to compete in the annual “Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions. He won the tournament in impressive fashion, netting $250,000 for claiming the top spot. He would also appear in the 2019 “Jeopardy!” all-stars matchup as a team captain.
His most recent recent “Jeopardy!” appearance came not as a contestant but as a special guest host for the Tournament of Champions. Standing behind the same podium that his hero, Alex Trebek, once stood was a dream come true for Cohen. He began his tenure earlier this year, overseeing the annual tournament and crowning the winner. Cohen drew mostly positive reviews for his guest hosting performance and could receive consideration for the permanent gig in the future.
Cohen joins a lengthy list of celebrities that have stepped in to keep “Jeopardy!” going strong in Trebek’s absence. He is the second former contestant to take on the role, with fan-favorite Ken Jennings also taking a stint as the quiz show’s guest host.
“Jeopardy!” will have a brand new host this week as Dr. Sanjay Gupta will step behind the lectern for the first time.
