Maybe it was his knuckler. Maybe his pitch was the perfect one to start off the first game of the series. Whatever it was, the Seattle Mariners celebrated a victory against the Texas Rangers during game one of a three-game series. And “Jeopardy!” champion Ken Jennings just happened to have thrown the first pitch of the thrilling Friday night game.
“THAT”S ANOTHER WALK-OFF WIN,” tweeted the Seattle Mariner’s official Twitter page after their 10th inning comeback against the Rangers during July 2’s home game.
Ken Jennings retweeted the post, joking that he takes full credit for the win since he started the white-knuckler game off by throwing the first pitch that evening.
“Absolutely taking credit for this,” the Jeopardy GOAT joked in his July 3 retweet. The day before, Jennings took to Twitter to contemplate just what he wanted to throw out during the first pitch.
Life Long Mariners Fan Ken Jennings Plays Part in July 2 Win
“I’m throwing out the first pitch tomorrow! Might try a knuckler,” Ken Jennings mused in a July 1 tweet. Maybe it was the knuckler that Jennings considered throwing. Does this mean the “Jeopardy!” champion ready to take on a new challenge in professional baseball? Not likely.
However, maybe it was some good juju he brought to the mound that evening. Whatever it was, the lifelong Seattle Mariners fan is surely proud to have been part of the nail-biter of a game.
This win improved Seattle’s season to 44-39, winning nine times over the last 12 games. Many of which have been last-minute walk-off victories.
Friday’s game marked the first full-capacity game of the season. With the stands full for the first time in ages, this also meant there were a whole lot of eyes were on Ken Jennings as he stepped to the plate that evening. It didn’t seem to phase the “Jeopardy!” champion, however. He greeted the fans right before the pitch and then headed to the mound like a pro. The star was even sporting his own personalized Seattle Mariners jersey; complete with the celebrity’s lucky number – 74.
What Is the 74 for?
Jennings is well-known for his massive amounts of knowledge which led to a historic run on the hit game show “Jeopardy!,” in 2004. The game-show champion had a 74-episode winning streak.
So, it only made sense that the quiz-show champion would sport that winning number while he tossed out the first ball of the Friday evening game. During his historical “Jeopardy!” winning streak, Ken Jennings took home a total of $2.5 million in winnings.
