‘Jeopardy!’ Icon Ken Jennings Asks Who’s Ready for ‘Bright Boy Summer’ Ahead of ‘The Chase’ Return

by Chris Haney

On Sunday afternoon, former Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings amusingly asked his fans and followers on Twitter if they’re ready for “bright boy summer” as The Chase nears its return to television.

Jennings is most well-known for his legendary run on Jeopardy! back in 2004. The former contestant still holds the record for the longest winning streak in the game show’s history with 74 consecutive victories. However, he and two other former Jeopardy! champions now star on another game show: The Chase.

The game show is similar to Jeopardy! in the fact that it’s a trivia-based competition. A team of three contestants take part in a fast-paced quiz as they attempt to earn as much money as possible. Of course there’s a catch. A quiz genius – known as the Beast – competes against the team. The Beast’s role is to catch contestants by answering more questions than they do.

Therefore former Jeopardy! contestants make for great Beasts on The Chase. Enter Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer, and Brad Rutter – arguably the three most successful contestants in Jeopardy! history. Good luck beating any of those three in a quiz-based competition.

The Chase is an American version of the originally British game show. With ABC recently renewing the game show for another season, fans don’t have much longer to wait. As The Chase’s Twitter account pointed out, “The squad is back in three weeks!”

Jennings, forever in the joking mood, added to The Chase‘s tweet. He hilariously asked, “Who’s ready for bright boy summer?” The 46-year-old is referencing Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj’s 2019 hit “Hot Girl Summer.” In this case, it won’t be hot girls taking over summer. It’ll be the “bright,” intelligent boys taking over ABC over the coming months.

‘The Chase’ Featuring Former ‘Jeopardy!’ Icon Champions Gets Renewal From ABC

In early April, the ABC network announced its unscripted summer schedule, including the renewal of The Chase. With the help of three former Jeopardy! championsThe Chase‘s first season on ABC earned solid ratings.

The first American season of the show on ABC aired in January, but only taped nine episodes. Following the popularity of The Chase, the network is bringing the game show back for a second season. Additionally, they wasted no time getting back to production.

According to a Deadline article, ABC ordered a longer run of the series for its second season. They also won’t be waiting until next year for Season 2. As previously mentioned, the new season is gearing up to restart in only three weeks.

Rob Mills, EVP of Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment at Walt Disney Television, shared further details with Deadline. He shared his excitement for the return of The Chase, and looks forward to keeping up the momentum of the game show.

The Chase is one of those ones we wanted to get back on as soon as possible because we really want the momentum of that format to keep going,” Mills explained. “Hopefully you’ll see million dollar final chases in this second cycle. But we really are high on that format. We’re excited with how it did this winter and we’re glad we can bring it back so quickly.”

The Chase will return on Sunday, June 6 at 9 p.m. It will air in between Celebrity Family Feud (8 p.m.) and To Tell the Truth (10 p.m.).
