Ken Jennings Reflects on His Last Conversations With Long Time ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek

Ken Jennings spoke to Good Morning America at the beginning of the year about his relationship with the long-running host of Jeopardy! Alex Trebek. He reveals that he spoke to Alex on the phone the weekend he passed away from cancer.

“I remember him just being very confident. Me to be a guest host if he ever needed that,” Jennings explained. “We were hoping we’d have him with us for longer.” He then reflects on the one thing that Trebek always emphasized, he’s not the star of Jeopardy!

Jennings also states that Trebek made it all about the players and the competition instead of about him. “It’s just hard to imagine that in the TV landscape today, a star of his size saying, ‘Hey, the game is not about you’ – but that was great advice.”

Ken Jennings Talks Permanent Hosting Gig

Jennings adds that he hopes to be selected for the gig.

“I think one thing we’ve seen with the guest host rotation is that everyone has a spin on it.” He adds that he thinks the Jeopardy! Producers are picking guest hosts with credibility.

Those who have guest hosted for Jeopardy! so far include Jennings, Savannah Guthrie, Dr. Oz, Anderson Cooper, and Katie Couric. CNN health correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta is currently hosting.
