The search for someone to replace Alex Trebek as the permanent host of “Jeopardy!” has revealed many things.
For example, controversial statements by Mike Richards came to light after he was chosen for the job. There was also a report that Ken Jennings, one of the most successful contestants in the history of “Jeopardy!”, was not chosen to replace Trebek due to controversial tweets.
According to the Wall Street Journal, one of these tweets read: “Nothing sadder than a hot person in a wheelchair.” Jennings reportedly shared this in 2014.
In the end, Richards, who also serves as the executive producer of “Jeopardy!”, was named the host of the show’s weekly syndicated episodes. Actress Mayim Bialik was given the role of host for the popular quiz show’s primetime specials.
After he was named the host of the show, controversial statements by Mike Richards led to him stepping down as the host. So, the host for a new permanent host of “Jeopardy!” is underway yet again.
Fans Share Their Thoughts on the “Jeopardy!’ Hosting Role
Unsurprisingly, fans of “Jeopardy!” and Ken Jennings have thoughts on the search for a host, as well as the 74-time champion not landing the hosting gig. Some of those fans shared their feelings in response to a recent post on Reddit. The thread was titled, “I can live with Ken not getting the host job (as long as they choose the right person). What I can’t live with is Ken getting snubbed because of dubious reasons.”
This thread was created by user Another_Throwaway18. They added: “… It’s a betrayal of what us as hardcore fans think of the value of ambassadors of the show. Why should we then reward it with our viewership? No double standards, please, Sony.”
In response to those comments one fan of “Jeopardy!” argued that fans of the show would pretty quickly overlook previous tweets by Jennings and welcome him as the host of the quiz show.
“Often times (sic) these stories are meant to be clickbait. They will take bits and pieces of the story and publish them. If he had terrible tweets from years ago but could make them a ton of money, they would have him go on an apology tour and moved forward,” JayNotAtAll wrote about Jennings’ tweets. “Honestly, the vast majority of Jeopardy! watchers wouldn’t have thought much about his past tweets.”
Fans Claim Ken Jennings Apologized for Previous Comments
Some fans said that Ken Jennings has also apologized for his previous comments. This, one user claimed, sets him apart from Mike Richards.
“Ken apologized years ago and doesn’t have a pattern of abusing people. It’s not the same as with Mike. Ken clearly has what it takes to get the hosting gig. If he doesn’t and Bialik does in spite of her views, I’ll be livid. There are plenty of fine candidates for this job,” Unadvantaged posted.
User superfastmomma also had this to say about Ken Jennings: “…He apologized. And not in a public relations firm wrote this apology kind of way. Plus, he had a strong body of public work out there, including tons of charity events and such. …”
“Jeopardy!” fans will just have to wait and see how the hosting drama plays out.
