As the “Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions is underway, contestants are gearing up to earn huge sums of money.

However, the show will also be matching the final cash prize and donating to a very worthy cause.

“For the Tournament of Champions, ‘Jeopardy!’ is going to match the winner’s prize of $250,000 and donate that amount to the Hope of the Valley Trebek Center for the Homeless … I can’t think of a more fitting way for the show and this tournament to honor the legacy of Alex Trebek,” guest host of the tournament Buzzy Cohen said on the show.

‘Jeopardy!’ Donates to Special Charity

The “Jeopardy!” tournament is set to air from May 17 to May 28. Along the way, the show is honoring and remembering the late host Alex Trebek. The famous “Jeopardy!” host was adored by millions of viewers and was also passionate about giving back during his life.

Since his death in November, the show has been filling in the season with different famous guest hosts. Each host picked a charity while they were hosting. The show then matched the earnings of the contestants playing during their stint on the show to that charity of choice.

Now, “Jeopardy!” is continuing with that donation tradition for the ongoing tournament. The Hope of the Valley Trebek Center for the Homeless helps to tackle the increasing homelessness crisis in Los Angeles. Alex Trebek and his wife, Jean, supported the project as donors before he passed away. They helped to create a building that houses over 100 people in cubicles as a form of transitional living.

The donation of $250,000 will have a massive impact on the project’s ability to help those in need in the community Alex Trebek loved so much. He once told People, “Homelessness is a serious problem. I wanted to do something, so I researched this charity, visited their facility and personally saw the good work they are doing and wanted to help. I hope others will do what they can as well.”

In addition to helping the homeless population, Trebek had also supported many other causes during his life.

According to CNN, two months after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he spoke to a crowd at the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s PurpleStride Los Angeles walk. “What we have heard from today’s speakers is that there is always hope,” he said to the crowd.

“Jeopardy!” champions James Holzhauer and Steven Grade encouraged people to donate to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research, the largest private funder for pancreatic cancer research.

Alex Trebek also had his the Trebek Family Foundation alongside his wife. He has worked to improve geographic literacy during his career. Namely, he hosted the National Geographic Bee for 25 years and made it a more popular broadcast. He also supported the American Film Institute and was a huge fan of classic films.

He was one of the most generous donors to the Musk Ox Development Corporation, a nonprofit that helps the musk ox. It happened to be his favorite animal because he said he liked “the way their furry coats wave in the breeze when they are running.”

He also was an avid conservationist. In the 1990s he purchased the land between Los Angeles’ Runyon and Nichols Canyons. It’s called the “Trebek Open Space” and he eventually donated it to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority as public space.

“Jeopardy!” gives to charities doing amazing work as an honor to the show’s late host that did so throughout his whole career.
