In a recent interview, current Jeopardy! champion Matt Amodio opened up about his ongoing win streak and spoke about the game show’s filming schedule.
On Monday, the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Science shared a Q&A session interview with Amodio. The current Jeopardy! champ is a Ph.D. student at the Ivy League university. As of last night, the contestant moved up to fourth place with his 14-episode winning streak. In addition, he’s earned more than $440,000 during his ongoing stint on the popular game show.
While speaking with the Yale outlet, they asked Amodio about what it’s like to tape episodes of the show. As he shared, Jeopardy! tapes five episodes per day of filming. Amodio revealed that when you’re on a winning streak like he’s on, you have long days on the set. In fact, they can be 12-hour days if you win five in a row like he has.
“They go in and they tape a whole week – so five games – in one day,” Amodio told the Yale outlet. “And boy, it’s a long day. You go in there at 7 in the morning. And I’m not a morning person – I just discovered that there is a 7 in the morning, as well as the 7 in the evening that I already knew about. And I’m there until about 6 p.m. or 7 p.m.”
Additionally, Amodio touched on the anecdotes about his life that are presented mid-show each episode. When you’re on this type of winning streak, it can be difficult to come up with that many fun facts about yourself.
“I was actually just as stressed about that part of the show as I was about the questions and answering part of the show. ‘What am I going to say, how am I going to say it?'” he added.
‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Matt Amodio ‘Amazed’ Winning Streak Kept Going
In early August, the reigning Jeopardy! champion revealed that he’s “amazed” by his win streak in an Entertainment Tonight interview. Matt Amodio shared that he never thought about winning multiple episodes. His goal was to win a single episode and push on from there.
“I go in on the first day, and I say, ‘I hope it goes well. But if I win a single game, I’m going to be as delighted as can be.’ And I won, but my attitude is to tend to be hungry,” Amodio explained to Entertainment Weekly recently. “And so once I won one, I wasn’t sitting on my laurels or anything. I said, ‘You know, that was good. Let’s do it again.’”
The current champion called it a dream to even have the opportunity to be on his current win streak. Amodio seems genuinely stunned about his run on the popular game show.
“I went into a full day of taping saying, ‘This is just the dream. I can’t believe I have the opportunity to do this.’ And to get the opportunity to come back as a returning champion was just astounding to me. Each step of the way, I was just kind of amazed that it kept going,” the Jeopardy! champion added.
