The streak of reigning “Jeopardy!” champion Matt Amodio came to an end on Monday, as he was defeated by a fellow contestant.
It was a bittersweet moment for Matt Amodio as the score at the end of Monday’s “Jeopardy!” episode was not in his favor. The champion’s impressive streak comes to an end after he rattled 38-straight victories in the battle of the brains. That number puts him second on the all-time consecutive wins list, behind only the legendary “Jeopardy!” champion, Ken Jennings.
It is fitting that Amodio won 38 matches as that is nearly half the number that Jennings won several years ago. Jennings’ streak famously extended to 74 straight wins back in 2004 and he is widely considered the greatest game show contestant of all time. While Amodio came up short in his bid to catch Jennings, the two champions will now forever be mentioned in the same breath.
On more than one occasion, Matt Amodio says he looks up to Jennings and patterned his game habits after the “Jeopardy!” GOAT. After Monday’s episode concluded, Amodio took to social media to shout out Jennings and thank him for the inspiration.
“Referring to Jeopardy, ‘You are half the man Ken Jennings is’ is a great compliment,” Amodio says. “Referring to life in general, it is an even greater one. Thanks for being you, Ken.”
Amodio concludes his Tuesday social media post with a red heart emoji. “Jeopardy!” fans were quick to react to Amodio’s heartfelt post, wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Amodio will likely return to his studies as he works toward earning his Ph.D. at an Ivy League school.
“Both of you are great players and you deserve your success, Matt,” a Twitter user says. “Well done!”
