The winning streak is over for “Jeopardy!” champion Matt Amodio, but his game show legacy will live on forever.

Amodio took his final bow after a shocking defeat on Monday’s “Jeopardy!” episode. The champion’s impressive winning streak comes to an end after he rattles off 38 straight victories. That total number of consecutive wins puts him in second place on the all-time list behind only the legendary Ken Jennings. Widely considered the greatest game show competitor of all time, Ken Jennings famously won 74 straight “Jeopardy!” matches in 2004.

While Amodio failed to catch Jennings, he came closer than anyone ever has. Amodio handled the defeat with the same class that we have come to expect from him. In an odd twist, Amodio actually finished in third place during his final episode. Both of his competitors got the Final “Jeopardy!” clue correct, while Amodio did not. That proved to be the crushing blow in the stunning defeat.

The new “Jeopardy!” champion is Jonathan Fisher, an actor from Coral Gables, Florida, as he accumulated $29,200 in his debut. Jessica Stephens, a statistical research specialist from Nashville, Tennessee finished in second place with $28,800. Amodio wrapped up his final episode with only $5,600 — well below his average outing. After rarely being challenged in previous episodes, Amodio was dominated by his fellow contestants during Monday’s matchup. He entered the Final “Jeopardy!” round in a distant third place behind Stephens and Fisher. He took the loss in stride and congratulated Fisher on his victory. He also took to social media to offer up some advice to an evidently thirsty new champion.

“Better re-hydrate, Jonathan…you get to play again tomorrow,” he says in the Twitter post.

‘Jeopardy!’ Has a New Champion as Matt Amodio Falls in Defeat

There is plenty to be said about Matt Amodio’s “Jeopardy!” run and it is likely we have not seen the end of his time on the show. He will undoubtedly be asked to participate in upcoming special editions of the show, such as the Tournament of Champions.

Amodio quickly became a favorite of game show fans for his humble approach and friendly nature. While “Jeopardy!” fans are sad to see him go, they are excited to see what Fisher can do as the new champion. As for Amodio, he will resume his studies and continue playing trivia nights at local bars. He knows he will have a leg up when he heads into a nearby watering hole to partake in quiz battles.

“I know going into every bar trivia game that I play that I’m going to come in with a little intimidation factor,” he said post-episode. “But also, I just like the badge that it represents. As somebody who prioritizes knowledge and knowing things, this is really a good one to have following me everywhere.”
