There was much more to Alex Trebek than hosting the beloved game show, “Jeopardy!” — he was also a loving father and husband.
From 1974 to 1981, the late TV personality was married to Elaine Trebek Kares.
Even though they didn’t have any kids together, Trebek adopted Elaine’s daughter Nicky before he married his second wife, Jean Currivan Trebek, in 1990.
That same year, Trebek and his second wife welcomed their son Matthew Trebek. Three years later, they would become parents again when they had a girl named Emily Trebek.
Nicky, Trebek’s eldest daughter, follows in her late father’s footsteps as she’s an employee on “Jeopardy!,” and she worked with her dad for years before he passed away.
In addition, she’s also a singer and songwriter who loves to design clothes for her fashion brand called Rock Idol clothing.
While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Nicky said she’s just like her dad because she has a “similar passion for organization” when it comes to “cleanliness” in the household.
Even though her dad is no longer with his kids, not a day goes by when she doesn’t think of her father. In February, Nicky uploaded a heartwarming throwback photo of Trebek pointing his arms in the air on Instagram.
“It’s been 3 months [since my dad died] and rather than post something sad, I #choosejoy … this always makes me laugh thinking about how many times he did that trying to get it right,” Nicky penned, adding the hashtags, “missing you always” and “milestones and memories.”
Matthew graduated from Fordham University in 2015 and is now a restaurateur in New York City and co-owns a Mexican restaurant called Oso.
“There was just something about the hospitality industry that I fell in love with,” he told Fordham News. “It’s great because it’s very free form in that it allows you to venture out into so many different fields: design, food, drinks, music, graphic design, and even just talking to people.”
Matthew also jokingly added that he doesn’t get his refined tast buds from his father.
“He would be fine eating chicken, white rice, and broccoli for the rest of his life,” he said. However, he did reveal that his dad did help him in the construction progress and inspecting the restaurant.
After Trebek passed away, his wife, Jean, revealed how their son honored Trebek’s legacy. On Instagram, Jean announced they were donating Trebek’s clothes to charity.
“I sincerely appreciate my son, Matthew, and his great idea to donate his Dad’s suits to @thedoefund,” she wrote. “I had never heard about this amazing organization until Matt brought it to my attention … it truly is so wonderful. It warms my heart to know that Alex’s suits will be donated to such an important cause.”
Trebek’s only daughter, Emily, graduated from Loyola Marymount University and now works as a real estate agent in California.
“I have always been interested in homes. When I was little, I wanted to be an architect. After graduating, I decided to get into real estate. As I was getting ready to flip my first house, I told my dad that I wanted to do it with him,” Emily once recalled.
After her dad passed she honored him with a sweet tribute.
“If dad can fix something, he will not have anyone else do it. I remember back when I was learning to drive, and I would accidentally run over a sprinkler head or path lighting in the driveway, we all knew dad would be out five seconds later fixing it,” she continued. “And I always watched him fix things and wanted to learn. I don’t have words to express how much it means to me that he helped. Just telling him how much I appreciate it and how much I thank him for guiding me through this and helping me sounds so insignificant. I don’t have the words to make it sound as significant as I feel.”
