‘Jeopardy!’ Names Mayim Bialik as Host of Spinoff Series: What to Know

by Megan Molseed

Nearly one year after the death of iconic “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, the gameshow has announced the show’s executive producer, Mike Richards as Trebek’ss permanent replacement. While this long-awaited news is certainly exciting, another exciting piece of the story has also emerged. The producers of the long-running game show have now announced a primetime “Jeopardy!” spinoff series hosted by Mayim Bialik.

“We are thrilled to begin the next chapter of America’s Favorite Quiz Show with Mike hosting our daily show and Mayim hosting new versions of “Jeopardy!,” said Chairman of Global Television Studios and Corporate Development for Sony Pictures, Ravi Ahuja of the announcement.

“Mayim has a wonderful energy, an innate sense of the game, and an authentic curiosity that naturally represents the “Jeopardy!” brand,” added Ahuja.

From Guest Host To Permanent Addition

Bialik is one of the many guest-hosts tapped to run the most recent “Jeopardy!” episodes. Each guest host stepped in while the show’s producers sought a permanent replacement.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to join the “Jeopardy!” family,” Mayim Bialik of the news.

“What started out with my 15-year-old repeating a rumor from Instagram that I should guest host the show has turned into one of the most exciting and surreal opportunities of my life!” she exclaimed in the Wednesday statement.

“I’m so grateful and excited to continue to work with Mike Richards, and I’m just over the moon to join forces with him and Sony,” Bialik continued.

“Her academic track record and enthusiasm for the game made her a terrific guest host,” said Mike Richards of the actress, author, and neuroscientist’s addition to the game show. “It will be a privilege to produce the primetime series with her as host.”

The late Alex Trebek has hosted “Jeopardy!” since 1984. The famous host was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer about one year before his death. Trebek’s last day taping the iconic television show was October 29, 2020, just ten short days before his death. The host’s last episode aired in January.

Shortly after Alex Trebek passed, “Jeopardy!” producers announced that it would be some time before a permanent host is named. In the meantime, the producers opted to invite a series of interim hosts to take on the hosting duties for the remainder of the show’s thirty-seventh season.

A Long Run of ‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Hosts

Many of the iconic gameshow’s guest hosts spent about a week at the hosting podium. However, a few of the “Jeopardy!” guest hosts took on the duties for about two weeks.

Mayim Bialik will be heading the Jeopardy! National College Championship along with any other “Jeopardy!” spin-off.

The “Jeopardy! National College Championship” is the first of its kind. The spin-off will feature fifteen university and college students in the answer-question competition. In the new game show, the competitors will each be vying for a grand prize of $100,000. The series will air on ABC in 2022.
