Who is the current frontrunner to take over Alex Trebek’s position as Jeopardy! host based on viewer ratings?
After the unfortunate loss of Alex Trebek, the beloved host of Jeopardy! for more than 36 years, the game show has been working tirelessly to try and fill the massive shows Trebek left behind.
Trebek died in early November after an 18-month battle with stage four pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years old.
Jeopardy! Host Hunt
Over the past few months, Jeopardy! has brought in the best talent on television to try their hand at hosting the hit show. However, if Jeopardy! chooses someone for the permanent position based on viewer ratings, who is currently in the lead?
We should note that after Trebek’s death, many fans tuned in to see how the show would run without the staple. Since then, the numbers have steadied back to normal, so this does have an effect on the ranking.
The first person to hold the position after Alex Trebek was Jeopardy! royalty, Ken Jennings. According to Broadcasting + Cable, he is the host to beat at this point after serving for six weeks. He ranks in with a 6.2 rating.
After Jennings, executive producer Mike Richards takes second place with a 5.9 rating. The following hosts were as follows: TV host Katie Couric with a 5.3, Green Bay Packer quarterback Aaron Rodger with a 5.6, and Anderson Cooper with a rating of 5.1.
In last place was Dr. Mehmet Oz with a 4.9 rating.
Later this week, Bill Whitaker’s reign as current quest host will be over.
However, the list of star-studded talent continues. “TODAY” host Savannah Guthrie, actress Mayim Bialik, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, NFL commentator Joe Buck, and “Reading Rainbow” host LeVar Burton will all take turns behind the podium. Additionally, the Jeopardy! panel only keeps growing. The show recently announced that CNBC’s David Faber and “Good Morning America” anchor George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts would also be hosts.
LeVar Burton Could Steal the Spotlight
We are excited to see how the rest of the competition will stack up, especially when heavily anticipated LeVar Burton’s takes the stage.
Burton was selected as one of the Jeopardy! hosts after more than a quarter of a million signed a petition to get him on the show. He already has a huge following, and the former Reading Rainbow host has expressed interest in the permanent position, calling it his “dream job.”
“In 2013, I tweeted for the first time how much I would love to have that job when Alex retired. But more than anything, I am eager to put my skills up against those of anyone else in contention and then let the chips fall where they may. The important thing to me is that I have an opportunity to compete for the job. That’s all I ever really wanted.”
LeVar Burton will serve as Jeopardy! host from July 26 until July 30.
