Jeopardy! guest host Robin Roberts wants to do her best to honor the late Alex Trebek.
When asked by Jeopardy’s YouTube channel what she wanted to bring to her gig, she began tearing up.
“I just want to bring a little bit of Alex, just a little bit,” she said about the original Jeopardy! host. “Can’t be him, no one can be him, but I just want to bring a little spirit that he brought each and every time he was here in this studio.”
Roberts said that her parents, who were long-time fans of the show, were cheering her on from heaven. The experience will be something that she holds dear in her heart for years to come.
“Being the host, being the one behind the podium… knowing all of the guest hosts that have been there but more importantly knowing the man behind that podium for all those years and to now stand there… it’s something that I will not forget ever,” she shared.
Roberts is the third guest host to be a former contestant on the game show. Newsweek reported that NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers and CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper previously played and were later guest hosts.
“I knew I was not destined to be a guest host because I was on ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’” Roberts told the outlet in March. “I was so bad as a guest, that I think that if I had been on the list, that anybody who remembers me from being on the celebrity show, they knew that.”
Robin Roberts will host Jeopardy! between July 19 through 23. Following her will be LeVar Burton, David Faber, and Joe Buck will follow her.
Have you ever wondered how Alex Trebek was able to pronounce every difficult word perfectly? There’s a simple explanation for that.
“I read through the questions before we tape,” Trebek explained in a 2014 interview with USA Today. “I look up words if I don’t know the pronunciation, or if it’s a foreign word.”
“I think it’s incumbent [on] a program such as ours to correctly pronounce words. People are looking at ‘Jeopardy!’ and using us as a barometer for accuracy of information,” he shared.
He also revealed to the outlet the reason he never joined social media. He believed that his life was too mundane and that fans wouldn’t enjoy his constant trivia knowledge, which he was clearly mistaken about.
Trebek also shared the insightful reason why he shaved his iconic mustache back in 2001. It was between shows and just on a whim. It managed to spark a cultural conversation.
