Several celebrity guest hosts have stepped up after the passing of long-time “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, and now it’s Robin Roberts‘ turn.
Roberts follows her fellow “Good Morning America” co-anchor George Stephanopoulos, who hosted this past week. In an exclusive interview before his “Jeopardy!” episodes premiered, Stephanopoulos discussed the challenges of the role but also the advice he took from Trebek.
“The job, don’t fumble when reading the clues,” he said. “Stay focused. Keep things moving. And remember what Alex always said, ‘It’s about the game.'”
Roberts also shared her thoughts about the late “Jeopardy!” host in a recent ABC News segment, including a moment that “really touched” her while Trebek was visiting the “GMA” studio.
“He came in, and he was cutting jokes, he was making us all feel at ease,” Roberts said. “He was making us feel at ease. And I’ll never forget that, because everybody was like, [gasps] on pins and needles, and it was Alex Trebek making us feel so at ease.”
Making people more comfortable is a territory the 37-year “Jeopardy!” host had plenty of experience with. Stephanopoulos echoed Roberts’ thoughts about Trebek’s easygoing presence as a guest, even while he was going through one of the most difficult times of his life.
“When he was a guest on ‘Good Morning America,’ he always made us smile. And he inspired us with his grace in the face of cancer,” Stephanopoulos shared on “GMA.”
Latest “Jeopardy!” Guest Host Robin Roberts Continues to Praise Alex Trebek
Roberts opened up her segment on ABC News by explaining what it felt like to be up on the stage where Alex Trebek hosted “Jeopardy!”.
“Even more so than being a contestant in ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’… being a host, being behind that podium, knowing all the people, all the guest hosts, that have been there,” Roberts said. “But more importantly, knowing the man that was behind that podium for all those years and to stand there… something I will not forget ever.”
The “Jeopardy!” guest host also discussed how she wants to channel Trebek’s energy into her performance as guest host.
“[I] just want to bring a little bit of Alex. Just a little bit. Can’t be him, no one can be him. But just want to bring a little of the spirit that he brought each and every time he was here in the studio. That’s all,” Roberts said.
Speaking of “Celebrity Jeopardy!”, Roberts is the third guest host so far to have been a previous contestant on the show, according to Newsweek. NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers and CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper also made appearances and also guest-hosted “Jeopardy!” earlier this year.
Newsweek also reported that Roberts joked to Ellen DeGeneres about being a guest host before she found out about her current gig. “I knew I was not destined to be a guest host because I was on ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!'” Roberts said back in March. “I was so bad as a guest, that I think that if I had been on the list, that anybody who remembers me from being on the celebrity show, they knew that.”
Now here we are, four months later, with Roberts slated to guest host from Monday, July 19 until Friday, July 23. LeVar Burton, David Faber, and Joe Buck will follow her.
