‘Jeopardy!’: Ryan Reynolds Lends His Support to LeVar Burton After Mike Richards Steps Down as Host

by Clayton Edwards

Mike Richards is no longer the host of Jeopardy!. That news pleased some fans of the show. However, the new development leaves the world wondering who will host the show once again. Fans and supporters of LeVar Burton are hoping to see the Reading Rainbow alum take the position.

Burton’s fans have been vocal about this since the days immediately following Alex Trebek’s passing. One fan posted a petition on November 14, 2020, to try to convince Sony to name LeVar Burton as the show’s permanent host. They continued their support through the guest-hosting process. Then, when Sony announced Richards as host, Burton’s fans were at the front of much of the criticism. After Richards stepped down, the fan fervor surrounding Burton came back with a vengeance.

LeVar Burton is even getting support from one of Hollywood’s biggest names. Yesterday, Ryan Reynolds fired off a tweet in support of Burton’s bid to host Jeopardy!.

In the tweet, Reynolds compared his and his fans’ desire to see him play Deadpool with Burton’s current situation.

“Pretty consistently from 2013 to 2015, Deadpool would explode on Twitter with fans wanting me to play him,” the Free Guy star wrote. The comparison is obvious, here. However, he went on to show just how well he knows about LeVar Burton’s situation. “It was awkward because I agreed with them but the studio didn’t see it. Ultimately the fans won and the rest is glorious history. I’m forever grateful.”

Ryan Reynolds ended the tweet with a touch of his trademark humor. In closing, he said, “Hi,” and tagged Burton’s official Twitter account.

LeVar Burton and Ryan Reynolds Have Something in Common

Ryan Reynolds is really holding up a bloody R-rated mirror to LeVar Burton’s situation. Sure, his fans want to see him host Jeopardy!. However, they aren’t alone. In fact, it is hard to imagine anyone who wants the job more than Burton.

To LeVar Burton, taking over for Alex Trebek would be a dream come true. He even tweeted about wanting the job back in 2013. He loves the show and sees taking over for Trebek as the next natural step in his career path. After all, he inspired the love of reading in countless children with Reading Rainbow. Furthermore, he continues to be passionate about children’s literacy and education.

No one really knows why Sony chose Mike Richards and Mayim Bialik to share hosting responsibilities on Jeopardy!. However, LeVar Burton didn’t make the official cut. Hopefully, with this second opportunity and a little help from the Merc with a Mouth himself, Burton will land his dream job. Only time will tell.
