‘Jeopardy!’: Sanjay Gupta Refuses to Say If He Would Be Full-Time Host, But Can ‘See the Appeal’

by Quentin Blount

As Jeopardy! continues to move forward with various celebrities as guest hosts, many of them have been asked whether or not they would consider hosting the show full-time. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the most recent celebrity to host the show, is no exception. He was asked that very question by WBZ-TV news anchor David Wade.

“Aaron Rodgers, NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, comes out and says, ‘You know what, I kind of like hosting ‘Jeopardy!’ as much as I like playing football.’ He’s not sure which one he wants to do,” Wade says. “So let me ask you doctor, would you prefer to be host of ‘Jeopardy!’ permanently or would you rather be doctor/medical correspondent?”

As fans of the iconic game show likely know by now, Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a man of many talents. Not only is he a neurosurgeon and chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, but Gupta is also the Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN. So, there is no doubt that he could successfully pull off hosting the show full-time. He says that there is certainly an “appeal” to wanting the full-time gig.

“Well, you know, I have to tell you, it’s a really interesting question because I would have never thought this,” Gupta admits. “I have been a lifelong fan and you don’t sort of put yourself into those shoes. But having done it — and no one has offered me the job or anything — I could absolutely see the appeal.”

Dr. Sanjay Gupta Leaves the Door Open to Becoming Full-Time ‘Jeopardy!’ Host

Dr. Gupta started his official two-week stint as the latest Jeopardy! guest host this past Monday, June 28. The game show has turned to a rotating series of guest hosts after the passing of longtime host, Alex Trebek. Gupta is the latest on that list.

During his interview with WBZ-TV, he didn’t exactly say yes or no to if he would accept the full-time hosting job on Jeopardy!. Instead, he said that he loved his current professions as a doctor and a medical reporter.

“There’s just something so comfortable and important about a show that just revolves around data, facts, honesty, integrity, you know, all of those things,” the neurosurgeon explains. “I love what I do now, don’t get me wrong. It’s great to practice medicine and report on important stories.”

Fans of the popular game show seem like they want Gupta to consider taking on hosting duties full-time. Many of them have commented on Gupta’s recent tweets to express how much they love him on Jeopardy!.

“As a Canadian and fan of the late great Alex Trebek, I feel that you would be an amazing replacement as a host on ‘Jeopardy!’.” one fan wrote.

“You were great!! If you weren’t a superior Doctor, I’d say they need you on ‘Jeopardy!’ full-time. BEST YET!!” another Twitter user said. “BUT…we need you to stay in medicine.”
