‘Jeopardy!’: Upcoming Guest Host George Stephanopoulos Remembers ‘Warm Family’ Moment With the Late Alex Trebek

by John Jamison

There has yet to be a guest host on “Jeopardy!” who doesn’t recall a moment they had with the eminent Alex Trebek. Whether it’s a personal memory they share from knowing him on a face-to-face basis, or it was them watching one of his thousands of episodes of the show, the late host’s impact is undeniable.

This week, George Stephanopoulos of “Good Morning America” is set to take the reigns of the long-running game show. He’ll be taking over from Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who turned in an impressive two weeks of his own. But as part of the hand-off, “Jeopardy!” has taken it upon itself to interview Stephanopoulos.

In his exclusive guest-hosting interview, Stephanopoulos brought up an occasion in which he and his family actually crossed paths with Alex Trebek. Very much in character, the late “Jeopardy!” icon went above and beyond/

“The one I remember most. I was with my family once at a Greek restaurant in New York called Loi. And Alex, as it turned out, was in the table right next to us with his kids,” Stephanopoulos said in the interview. “And he was just so warm, and he came over to the table, and greeted my parents and said very nice things about me to my parents. It was just such a beautiful thing to do.”

The Late ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Out of Context

The “Good Morning America” star loved being able to see Trebek in a non-“Jeopardy!” context. For how warm and welcoming he was on the show, that kindness came out even more when he crossed paths with George Stephanopoulos and his family.

“We had a great talk. And it was just great to see him offset in real life. And he was incredibly warm and a giving person, and we had a nice encounter that night.”

George Stephanopoulos and His Background

It’s a hard name to forget, and for good reason. Stephanopoulos is an Emmy Award-winning figure in journalism and has experience working as an advisor to President Bill Clinton. Combine that with his broadcasting skills and you have a good recipe for an interim “Jeopardy!” host.

It also helps that he loves the show. He said as much during his exclusive guest host interview.

“This is really such an honor to have the chance to come and guest host. Like everyone else, I grew up with ‘Jeopardy!'” Stephanopoulos said.

But, like most of the others who have walked this path before him, there are a fair amount of nerves involved in the job. But at least the stakes aren’t quite as high for him. Given his position and line of work, it would be quite a surprise if Stephanopoulos were to declare himself in contention for the permanent hosting job.
