‘Jeopardy!’: Upcoming Guest-Host LeVar Burton Has Long Had Interest in Permanent Hosting Gig

After an uproar on social media, LeVar Burton has been added to the name of celebrities in the running for a permanent hosting position on Jeopardy!.

The world of social media is an odd place that is capable of demanding what it wants.

When more than 250,000 people signed a petition demanding LeVar Burton be added to the list of Jeopardy! guest hosts, the popular show couldn’t ignore their requests any longer.

Longtime Jeopardy! Fan

However, this wasn’t something pressured on Burton. He has always been a fan of the show and even completed an episode of Celebrity Jeopardy! and won in 1995.

“It’s such a wonderful feeling to be at the center of that much grace,” explains Burton.

In fact, in 2013, LeVar Burton took to Twitter to share that being a host of Jeopardy! would be his “dream job.”

When recently speaking to the ladies of The View, Burton reveals what an honor this opportunity is to him. He said the chance to compete against other notable hosts is all he has ever wanted.

“In 2013, I tweeted for the first time how much I would love to have that job when Alex retired. But more than anything, I am eager to put my skills up against those of anyone else in contention and then let the chips fall where they may. The important thing to me is that I have an opportunity to compete for the job. That’s all I ever really wanted.”

LeVar Burton’s Competition

Jeopardy! will feature LeVar Burton on the show from July 26 until July 30. That gives him plenty of time to perfect his skills. He is up against an elite list of star-studded celebrities also with eyes for the permanent position.

Jeopardy! hosts who have already had their day in the spotlight include Jeopardy royalty Ken Jenning (frontrunner), executive producer Mike Richards, journalist Katie Couric, and TV personality Dr. Oz, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Currently, TV personality Anderson Cooper holds the position for another week.

Following Cooper, the list of talent continues. Today host Savannah Guthrie, actress Mayim Bialik, “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, NFL commentator Joe Buck, and Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton will all take turns behind the podium.

Additionally, the Jeopardy! panel only keeps growing. The show recently announced that CNBC’s David Faber, and Good Morning America anchors’ George Stephanopoulos, and Robin Roberts will also be hosts.

As we said, there is sure to be some stiff competition for the permanent position. The beloved Alex Trebek held the position for over 36 years until his unfortunate death in November. There are massive shoes to fill.
