In 2016, legendary Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek hilariously responded to one contestant’s favorite genre of music with his trademark deadpan humor.
Each episode of the popular game show, the Jeopardy! host walked over and introduces each of the contestants. One by one, Trebek would ask the contestants about themselves. Typically, the players will share a fun fact about themselves or reveal their favorite hobby.
During one episode, contestant Susan Cole described her favorite underground music genre. The legislative librarian from Bowie, Maryland revealed her love for nerdcore hip-hop to Trebek. However, the longtime Jeopardy! host was amusingly less than enthused about it.
“Your favorite type of music is something I’ve never heard of, but it doesn’t sound like fun,” Trebek said to Cole.
“[Nerdcore is] rapping about the things they love,” Cole explained. “Video games, science-fiction, having a hard time meeting romantic partners. It’s really catchy and fun.”
Although you can tell how much Cole enjoys the genre, Trebek wasn’t having it. He let out a deep sigh, and replied, “Losers, in other words.”
The crowd and Cole both burst out with laughter at Trebek making fun of the contestant’s favorite music. Yet he made sure to tell Cole, “No, I’m teasing you.”
Although she got made fun of by arguably the most famous game show host ever, Cole got the last laugh. She didn’t let Trebek’s joke phase her. In fact, she ended the show as a Jeopardy! champion and took home $22,600.
Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek Once Chased Thief Who Stole $600 From His Hotel
Alex Trebek had a rather eventful stay in a San Francisco hotel back in 2011. Not only did a robber steal his money and jewelry, but the Jeopardy! host tore his Achilles tendon while pursuing the thief.
During a 2015 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Trebek spoke about the wild story. He said that around 2:30 a.m. he heard a noise coming from inside his and his wife Jean’s hotel room. Trebek got up to check on the disturbance and noticed that his cash and bracelet had vanished.
In addition, he found a wad of tissue in the hotel room’s door. The thief put it there when they exited to make sure the door closed quietly. Trebek hurried and put pants on and made his way into the hallway. As soon as he got outside of his room, the Jeopardy! host spotted a woman walking away, so he confronted her.
“I looked down the hall, and there’s this woman walking away,” Trebek said to Howard Stern. “So I put my pants on and then she was walking out of the room where the ice machine is. I said, ‘What were you doing in my hotel room?’ ‘I wasn’t in your hotel room.’ ‘Yes, you were.’ And I said, ‘Then what are you doing up here, it’s 2:30 in the morning?’ ‘I was visiting friends.’ At 2:30 in the morning? I said, ‘Let me call security.’ Then she took off, and I took off after her. I got about 20 feet and then [snap], just like that. Not my knee, my Achilles tendon. It was like snap, I knew it immediately.”
Thankfully, security caught the thief, and she later went to jail over the matter. According to Trebek, he’s glad he stood up to the robber. But he amusingly admitted it may not have been the wisest since he didn’t know if she was armed. All’s well that ends well.
