Fans of Jeopardy! are in mourning after learning of the tragically early death of recent champion Brayden Smith, who dazzled the audience in Alex Trebek’s last shows.
While details are still coming out about the nature of the 24-year-old’s passing, fans are reflecting on “Billy Buzzsaw.” Considering he pulled off a five-day run as champion, his record of work speaks for itself.
In particular, Smith’s ability to pick out “Daily Doubles” was especially eye-catching. It’s one thing to know your stuff, but Smith and past champions find ways to maximize their earnings.
In an interview with the show on the “3-Day Champion Winners Circle,” Smith was asked about “Daily Doubles” and his logic.
“It’s always fun looking for the daily double,” Smith said. “Sometimes I feel like I look at the clue and I go, ‘That probably is a Daily Double.’ So I’ll pick it, and, of course, getting it right. They’re not worth anything, it’s not a good thing if you miss them, so just being able to be lucky and getting ones that are in my wheelhouse is great.”
The host of the interview then goes on to bring up famed Jeopardy! champion James Holzhauer, who also hails from Las Vegas.
“I can’t help but make a slight comparison,” Smith starts. “He is, I mean, he wasn’t the greatest of all time, but in my book, he’s certainly up there. Him getting six-figure wins each day, I haven’t even come close to that and don’t think I ever will.”
Unfortunately, Smith was correct in his prediction.

The news of Smith’s death was first shared by Brayden’s mother, Debbie.
“We are heartbroken to share that our dear Brayden Smith recently passed away unexpectedly. We are so grateful that Brayden was able to live out his dream on @jeopardy.”
