Jerry Springer brought back his own tradition of crooning an Elvis Presley love song to honor the King’s birthday.

Springer is the former politico and tabloid talk-show host. But he also sports an incredible set of pipes. Saturday night, he belted out Elvis’ Love Me Tender.

Springer and friends were dining at an Italian restaurant in Boca Raton, Fla. TMZ captured the video, and reports that dining also included a singer performing covers of classics from Frank Sinatra. Springer was sitting near the stage. The singer was about to finish his set. It was near closing time, so why not? Springer asked if he could go on stage. You can check out the video and judge for yourself on whether Jerry Springer did Elvis justice.

Springer likes to sing Elvis songs, usually in honor of Presley’s birthday, Jan. 8. We’re assuming the COVID-19 pandemic was the reason Springer was a couple of months late in honoring Elvis’ 86th birthday.

Jerry Springer had been honoring Elvis from a stage in Dallas. It started in 2014. That’s when Springer did his Elvis impersonation on the Kidd Kraddick morning radio show. Big Al Mack, one of the program hosts, invited Springer to sing at his restaurant. So Springer performed Love Me Tender at a place called Big Al’s near downtown Dallas.

Jerry Springer is the one-time mayor of Cincinnati. After that, he transitioned into journalism, covering politics for a local news station. And then he became the most popular TV anchor in the city. He used his time behind the anchor desk to prepare for his long-running talk show. His program, which started in 1991, initially tried to duplicate the success of Phil Donahue. But that was too vanilla.

By 1994, Springer discovered that sensationalism drew more eye balls than real issues. The show featured a lot of confrontations between guests. If there wasn’t an actual fight on stage, then something was amiss that day. His program had people discussing their fetishes. One show featured a transgender woman who claimed she cut off both of her legs with a power saw.

Jerry Springer doing an Elvis impersonation would’ve been more on brand if he also found people who claimed the King faked his own death and was living with space aliens on a tropical island. Singing Love Me Tender is all kinds of quaint.

Elvis performed the song in 1956 on the Ed Sullivan Show. The song was a No. 1 hit and the theme song of Love Me Tender, the movie, Elvis’ first starring role.

And, it was a perfect song for Jerry Springer to sing to honor the King’s birthday, albeit two months late.
