Most of us were asleep early Friday when Joe Biden took the lead in Georgia, a state that hasn’t gone blue since 1992. But John Legend had been waiting for the moment.
It didn’t matter that it was 3:30 a.m. Central time. Legend still crooned a smooth, cover of “Georgia On My Mind” in celebration.
Chrissy Teigen, Legend’s supermodel wife and avid Twitter user, was up as well. She tweeted “He has been waiting to post this for 5 hours.”
Legend quickly posted back, “it was one take, tho.”
John Legend Was Celebrating a Civil Rights Icon From Georgia
Here’s why so many were focusing on the numbers in Georgia. It’s usually been a slam-dunk win for Republicans. Bill Clinton, in 1992, was the last Democrat to win the state in the presidential race.
But since the polls closed Tuesday night, the margin between Donald Trump and Biden had dwindled. Although Biden was leading, Georgia still is too close to call.
The remaining ballots were in counties located in the Atlanta metro area. The vote totals there went heavily for Biden. The state still is too close to call.
It was noted on Twitter that ballots from Clayton County pushed Biden into the lead early Friday. The county is in the Congressional district formerly represented by civil rights icon John Lewis, who died in July.
“It’s wonderful, that’s my point,” the Rev. Jesse Jackson told The Associated Press Friday. “Dr. (Martin Luther) King and John Lewis speak from their graves today. The heavenly hosts rejoice.”
Earlier Thursday, Legend retweeted a clip of Lewis dancing to the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
Legend is a long-time supporter of Biden. He and Tiegen helped lead a Biden rally in Philadelphia. He spoke to Biden supporters and sang for them. Legend had been calling out rappers for supporting Trump.
Legend adds:
“Now, some people see the meanness, the bullying, the selfishness of Donald Trump and they mistake it for strength, a kind of twisted masculinity,” he continued. “Some see his greed and they mistake it for being good at business. Some of your former favorite rappers have been taken in by these lies. I think they even founded a new supergroup, it’s called the Sunken Place.”
