As die-hard Duke fans know, John Wayne was born in Iowa. His love of the water, however, would have him spend most of his life in California.
Sure, his incredible film career kept him in and around Hollywood for much of his time, too. Yet nothing dictated Wayne’s free time like the open ocean. To this end, the John Wayne Estate is sharing a rare photo of The Duke waterskiing off the California coast Wednesday. And it’s one snapshot fans won’t want to miss. After all, it’s not every day one sees The Duke in nothing but short shorts tearing up some waves!
“Duke was born in Winterset, Iowa but spent most of his life in California. He loved being on the water so he moved to Newport Beach in the 60’s where he lived on the bay with his family & docked his boat, the Wild Goose,” Wayne’s Estate shares to their official Instagram.
Check out the vintage, personal snapshot below, before we dive deep into John Wayne’s incredible history on the water:
John Wayne Lived His Life on the Water
“Duke was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending time fishing while he was on his boat, the Wild Goose,” his estate also posted to their Instagram recently. Indeed, Wayne was a prolific seaman and outdoorsman.
The Duke of Outsiders rarely missed a chance to set out on his famous vessel, The Wild Goose. He would often treat family, friends, and Presidents of the United States to fishing and/or pleasure voyages. In fact, he even once sailed the seas with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and more icons of their time.
The Wild Goose isn’t just any boat, however. Originally christened the USS YMS-328, this beaut is a decommissioned US Navy YMS-1-class. Built in Ballard, Washington on the Seattle coast, the boat that would eventually become John Wayne’s served in World War II.
After the war, she would become a private yacht. From The Wild Goose, John Wayne would catch any and all sorts of angler’s favorites. Right here on Outsider, John Wayne fans are treated to a glorious, vintage photo of the man himself wielding what looks to be a big ol’ Atlantic salmon. What a catch!
