Johnny Cash’s Daughter Rosanne Cash Supports Jason Isbell’s Disdain With 2020 CMA Awards

Jason Isbell and wife, Amanda Shires, are exiting the Country Music Association, with Johnny Cash’s daughter, Rosanne Cash, fully supporting the two country musicians’ decisions.

Remembering the Forgotten Country Music Heroes

During Wednesday’s CMA Awards, Isbell and Shires were disappointed, to say the least. The couple was upset at the fact many country legends who had passed away during the year weren’t honored as they believe the artists should’ve been.

These include John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver.

Following the 2020 CMAs, Isbell posted a photo of himself and his wife’s Country Music Association’s “Lifetime Membership” card. The caption expressed how they’re returning them due to the association’s failure of honoring those who passed. He ended his Tweet with, “I doubt anybody will care, but we cared a lot about our heroes.”

Rosanne Cash Agrees With the Couple’s Decision

However, Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash’s daughter, did care and responded to Isbell’s tweet. She mentions another country performer, her lifelong friend, Jan Howard, who went without receiving recognition, as well.

Fan reactions

People reacted to both Twitter posts:

One user says, “Guess it’s time to start a “real country music” association”.

On Isbell’s post, another user tweets, “Well considering modern country music is just pop with an accent I am not surprised”.

Johnny’s Daughter, Rosanne Cash

Rosanne, 65, is the eldest daughter of Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian. She is a singer, songwriter and musician with a country and Americana sound. Cash is the winner of a Grammy and a nominee for several other awards.

Others Disappointed in the 2020 CMA Awards

Other stars are unhappy with the snub to these musicians, as well.

Sturgill Simpson also posted about the Country Music Association’s choice not to acknowledge the performers who passed away in 2020, by saying in a recently deleted post:

“Don’t get it twisted,” he writes in the post caption. “[I] wouldn’t be caught dead at this tacky a— glitter and botox cake & c— pony show even if my chair had a morphine drip. I just wanted to see if they would say his name but nope. No time for Buddha….It’s time for this hegemonic horse s— ship to sink and for that to happen the music press needs to ask and demand answers to the hard questions instead of depending on those of us outside the box for the ‘tasty quote machine’ answers.”
