Kacey Musgraves and her husband Ruston Kelly are filing for divorce. Despite calling it quits, the country superstar and her musician husband want to “remain true friends.”

On Friday, the two shared a statement with the Associated Press regarding their split. “With heavy but hopeful hearts we wanted to put our own thoughts into the air about what’s happening. These kinds of announcements are always met with scrutiny and speculation and we want to stop that before it even starts.”

They continued by adding: “We believe that we were put into each other’s lives for a divine reason and have both changed each other infinitely for the better. The love we have for each other goes far beyond the relationship we’ve shared as husband and wife. It’s a soul connection that can never be erased. We’ve made this painful decision together—a healthy decision that comes after a very long period of trying the best we can. It simply just didn’t work. Though we are parting ways in marriage, we will remain true friends for the rest of our lives.”

Kacey Musgraves and Ruston Kelly’s History

The two met at Nashville’s iconic Bluebird Cafe. The two previously stated that it was love at first sight. During an interview with People, Kacey said: “Ruston played his first song, and I was just stunned by everything in it—the words, the melody, what he was saying. I was just sitting at this table, crying,” she said.

Ruston proposed on Christmas day in 2016. At the time, Musgraves took to Instagram to write about the engagement. “I didn’t say yes…I said HELL YESSSS!!” she said. “Last night, the best man I’ve ever met got down on one knee in my little pink childhood home..in the same room I played with my ponies and barbies and asked me the easiest question I’ve ever been asked. I finally know what everyone means when they say ‘you just know.'”

The two tied the knot on Oct. 14, 2017. Over the course of their marriage, Musgraves and Kelly spoke fondly of each other. During her Grammy Award winning acceptance speech, Musgraves said about Kelly and her Golden Hour album, “I really believe I wouldn’t have this album if I hadn’t met you and you didn’t open my heart like you did. So thank you so much.”
