Kacey Musgraves Speaks Out With Concern for Britney Spears Amid New Documentary

Britney Spears has recently been the center of a new documentary. It’s called “The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears.”

The film talks about the conservatorship that Spears continues to battle during her career, specifically after she suffered from a mental breakdown in 2008.

Now, many different celebrities are showcasing their support for Spears following the release of the documentary. This includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Miley Cyrus, Andy Cohen, and now, Kacey Musgraves.

The country artist took to Twitter to voice concern over Britney Spears.

She wrote, “Y’all..it’s plaguing me that nobody knows if @britneyspears is truly okay. Really hoping that if she isn’t she can formally vocalize it in some way and that she knows all of us on the outside really give a shit about her well-being.”

She also tweeted to discuss a part of the documentary itself.

“Also anybody gonna mention Ed McMahon and them CREEPY ass interview questions to a young girl … No. #FramingBritneySpears,” Musgraves wrote.

Other Celebrities Speaking Out

Miley Cyrus gave a shoutout to Britney Spears during her pre-Super Bowl performance. Hayley Williams, the lead singer of Paramore, has also been vocal on the issue.

“No artist today would have to endure the literal torture that media/society/utter misogynists inflicted upon her. The mental health awareness conversation, culturally, could never be where it is without the awful price she has paid,” Williams wrote in a tweet.

Lucy Hale, an actress from “Pretty Little Liars,” said that “this should really make us re-evaluate cancel culture & all the taboos that come along with mental health/illness.”

Since her large fame as a teen, Spears has been battling an increasingly sexist and skewed press. The documentary helps to point out the misogynistic world of the ’90s and early 2000s. It shows the strong and independent side of the singer, while the media only painted her as broken.

#FreeBritney Movement

After Britney Spears had a public breakdown in 2008, a conservatorship was put in place. This is when a legal guardian is given control over an individual’s finances.

At the time, the conservatorship was given to her father, Jamie Spears, and their attorney, Andrew Wallet, Time notes. Now, Spears has had recent attempts to remove him as her conservator. This is what led many fans and celebrities to voice support for Spears getting autonomy again.

The conservatorship has always been controversial amongst her fans. Many have seen signs of abuse and manipulation. She and her father also have a very strained relationship, yet he controls her huge fortune. She tried in November to remove her father from his role.

“My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father. She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career,” Spears’ attorney said to a judge during court, according to Variety.

Britney Spears Now

The film does not reach out to members of the family, as they are all in the middle of a court battle. However, it reached out to just about everyone else surrounding them. She is a famous pop sensation but is unable to make decisions that are in her own interests.

What Musgraves brings up is that she fears if Spears is okay after the documentary release.

“If you’ve done any interview with her for the past five to ten years, it was under careful watch from her handlers. We’ve heard from a lot of people in newsrooms that if you want to interview Britney, her team has final cut over what’s in the piece. A lot of news outlets wouldn’t agree to that, ethically — so you can’t have a journalist ask her how she’s feeling. The only thing you can see is her Instagram,” Samantha Stark, producer and director of the film said to Variety.

Now, fans are analyzing her actions on social media because it’s their only direct connection to the singer. At other times, she is literally surrounded by others.
