On Saturday, the Kansas City Royals matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates was delayed by half an hour after a standoff between police and an armed man at the Truman Sports Complex. The standoff began because of gun shots heard fired around the sports complex, according to reports.
The game had not started yet, so the first pitch was pushed back until authorities decided it was safe to continue. The sports complex in Kansas City, MO is the home of Kauffman Stadium, where the Royals play. Additionally, the Kanas City Chiefs play their home games in Arrowhead Stadium, which is located in the same complex.
“At about 6:30 p.m., tactical officers developed a plan to use less lethal devices to secure the armed individual,” read a tweet from the Kansas City Police Department. “The plan was successful and he was taken into custody without further incident. He was not injured. Two hand guns and a knife were recovered from the suspect.”
In fact, the standoff lasted more than six hours. Finally, the standoff came to end, and the game resumed. Police said the unnamed suspect “is under arrest on investigation of criminal charges associated with the initial shots fired at this time.”
The Royals and Pirates were scheduled to begin the game at 6:05 p.m. CT. But officials delayed the game to 6:35 p.m. as they announced on Twitter. Furthermore, the stadium was fully operational by around 7 p.m. CT, according to the police.
Since Major League Baseball is not currently allowing in-person attendance at games, there were zero fans present at Kauffman Stadium. On a normal game day, there would have ben thousands of fans outside tailgating. The Royals went on to defeat the Pirates in the delayed game by a score of 7-4.
