Hollywood is full of sham marriages. But Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder might be the only accidental fake marriage in Tinseltown. The two have starred in several projects together over the years. The most memorable — for good and ill — is probably Dracula. During the filming of the 1992 cult classic, the couple married by mistake.
Winona Ryder was the first person to bring this to the public’s attention in 2018. She explained to Entertainment Weekly that they filmed a scene for Dracula that included a wedding scene. Ryder said that director Francis Ford Coppola had a real priest conduct the entire ceremony.
“In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest,” she said. “We shot the master, and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”
Reeves said them he didn’t remember filming that scene. He doesn’t remember saying “I do” or the priests. But Coppola eventually settled the debate, siding with Ryder.
“In a sense when we were all done, we realized that Keanu and Winona really are married as a result of this scene and this ceremony,” he told the Guardian.
Esquire asked Reeves to clarify the matter for a cover story this week.
“Are you and Winona Ryder technically married?” he said. “We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests. Winona says we are. Coppola says we are. So I guess we’re married under the eyes of God.”
Ryder enjoys being married to the “internet’s boyfriend” Keanu Reeves. He told The Talk in 2019 that Stranger Things star texts him to say “Hello, husband” from time to time.
Though, it’s just a joke. They’re both in long-term committed relationships. Reeves is dating artist Alexandra Grant.

Keanu Reeves is a private person. He enjoys making movies and motorcycles, and the rest he keeps to himself. So, people often fill in the gaps and speculate what he’s up to. After Sandra Bullock told Ellen DeGeneres that she had a crush on Reeves while they filmed Speed, the internet did its thing. Headlines everywhere questioned if they two had ever hooked up on set.
The two have undeniable onscreen chemistry, but that’s where it ends, Bullock clarified to Esquire. Though, if they had dated, she thinks Keanu Reeves would be an excellent boyfriend.
“Nope. But who knows?” Bullock told the magazine. “Keanu’s a guy who, I feel like, is friends with every woman he’s ever dated. I don’t think there’s anyone who has something horrible to say about him. So maybe we could have survived. I don’t know.”
She also confirmed that he’s as nice as the legends about him say. Bullock remembered once when they were on set of Speed, and he mentioned how much he loved champagne and truffles. She said she’d like to try that combination someday and then forgot about it. A few days later, she was at home with a friend when a motorcycle pulled up in her driveway. It was Reeves with a bouquet of roses, a bottle of champagne, and a box of truffles.
She said they were delicious.
