Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman Open Up About Coming To America ‘With Nothing’

by Lauren Boisvert

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman know a little something about hardship; though they’re rich and famous now, it wasn’t always so for the actress and her country singer husband. Growing up, they both experienced the harsh realities of having “nothing.” Kidman opened up to Glamour UK about her rough childhood, and about Urban’s as well.

Nicole Kidman: “Both my parents came from nothing”

Last November, Nicole Kidman spoke with Glamour UK as their digital cover star, as reported by Fox News. When asked about her childhood, she said, “I’ve always been aware of privilege because both my parents came from nothing. When we moved to America, we had nothing.”

She went on to praise her father, saying, “When he became a psychologist, he would offer his behavioral therapy for nothing if they didn’t have any money, because he just wanted to help.” Of their first years in the U.S., Kidman said, “My parents had to go to the Salvation Army and get a donated mattress, which we all slept on.”

Nicole Kidman talked about her husband’s life in Australia as well; of Keith Urban’s family she said, “He grew up on a farm, literally in a shed. They didn’t have bedrooms. Four of them lived in a shed that subsequently burned down.” She described him as “a man who is totally self-made.”

Keith Urban Talks About the Love of His Life

On Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert last September, Keith Urban gushed about his wife of 15 years; “She’s just the one, that was it,” he told Shepard, “She’s the one that I was searching for my whole life, and everything not only changed, but had to change in me if I was going to go that road.”

During Armchair Expert, Shepard asked Urban if he ever felt challenged by Kidman’s illustrious career; Urban replied that he hadn’t, because her contribution is only one thing brought home to support their family. “It’s a big one,” he said, “but there’s so many other things that I can bring that help and blossom the family and protect it and take care of it and grow it, not just fiscally.”

Urban also praised Nicole Kidman for inspiring him in his artistic career as well as his personal life. In an interview with Apple Music, as reported by Just Jared, he said, “What I’ve learned from her is to be more fearless in artistry and go for the curious place that you want to go to as an artist and don’t question it.”

Kidman has previously said that their relationship is a “miracle”; she told The Daily Mail, “Two Aussies born in the same year, but living in different worlds and cities, how did that happen? It was meant to be.”
