Oscar-winning Nicole Kidman of Big Little Lies has gotten the honor of playing comedy icon Lucille Ball in the film Being The Ricardos. According to her husband, Kieth Urban, Kidman loves it! In an interview with ExtraTV, Urban expressed how proud he is of Nicole Kidman “I’m proud of her for anything. It’s really an extraordinary role, and it’s an extraordinary script.”

While some film sets can be stressful, Keith Urban also said that “She’s loving doing it, and it’s an amazing cast. Props to everyone for making things happen.”

Being The Ricardos is an Aaron Sorkin film about Lucille Ball and her husband, Desi Arnaz. Ball and Arnaz were married from 1940 to 1960. They both made history in many ways. Ball and Arnaz played the first interracial couple to appear on TV. Afterward, Ball became the first woman to own and lead a major Hollywood studio. When it comes to making a movie about the two, there’s certainly plenty of material to work with.

Nicole Kidman ‘Excited’ to play Lucille Ball

In a January interview with Variety, Kidman said she was very excited to play Lucille Ball. “I love Lucille,” Kidman said of Ball, “Having looked now and delved into her, she’s an amazing woman. I’m very excited for people to see what Aaron found out about her and the way he’s interpreted Desi and Lucy, and the way that it’s so rich. I didn’t know any of this.”

She’s also thrilled to work alongside Aaron Sorkin and her co-star Javier Bardem, who’s playing Desi Arnaz. Nicole Kidman also watched a lot of “I love Lucy” to prepare.

Though, some were unhappy with the choice of Nicole Kidman to play Lucille Ball. With someone as iconic as Ball, that’s bound to happen. Everyone will have their own ideas for who should play icons such as Lucille Ball. Criticisms ranged from Nicole Kidman not being “funny enough” to not “looking enough” like Lucille Ball.

Lucile Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, eventually came to Kidman’s defense over Facebook. “Nobody has to impersonate Lucy Ricardo nor do the Vitameatavegamin routine, or . . . any of the silly things. It’s the story of Lucille Ball, my actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo, and her husband, Desi Arnaz, my dad, not Ricky Ricardo.”

The fact that the film centers more on Ball and Arnaz, not the Ricardos, is what makes it so exciting. With Aaron Sorkin behind the helm and Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as the leads, Being the Ricardos will definitely be one to watch.
