The holidays mean spending time with family, but also stress, anxiety, and expectations. On a segment of her show, Kelly Clarkson gave advice on any awkward holiday situations and opened up about how she relieves stress during these times.

Kelly Clarkson Time with Her Kids

Kelly Clarkson and her husband Brandon Blackstock recently filed for divorce. They are parents to River Rose and Remington Alexander. As the person with primary physical custody, Clarkson gets creative in the kinds of activities she does with her kids.

She talked about one of her ideas during the holiday’s tips and trips part of the show. The singer recommended that creating homemade gifts with kids could be an excellent gift for some members of the family.

“I love making stuff … Not only because it’s fun to create something, but it’s therapeutic. When I color with my kids, I’m doing it because it’s fun with them and they love it, and they ask me to do it. But it’s [also] really soothing, oddly. I used to laugh at people when I saw adults with coloring books … I didn’t get it. Now, I am one of them. It’s really therapeutic and this has been a hard year,” Kelly Clarkson said.

Clarkson has revealed in the past just how important it is for her to spend time with her kids.

“I want to make sure they come first. When we were doing the schedule for the show, I was like, ‘I have to drop my kids off at school.’ And I’m always the one who puts them to bed. You just have to prioritize and juggle and make people know it’s an important thing . . . And don’t feel guilty about it,” Clarkson said in an interview with People.

Even as a Grammy winner and someone who has sold over 25 million albums, her kids will always come first.

The Awkwardness of the Holiday Season

For many people, getting together with family during the holidays creates a lot of awkwardness. It often means political or religious conversations or other kinds of barriers.

While most people say that avoiding talking about politics and tough topics with family is the best option, Clarkson disagrees.

“I do think no progress will happen, no change will happen, unless we talk about it,” Clarkson said.

She even talked about how she and her mother are different on certain things, but still love and respect each other. This is what makes it easy for them to have some tough conversations.

On part of the show, Kelly Clarkson asked her fans to send in their awkward family questions to get some advice. One fan said that her dad’s side of the family was “not-so-fun.” She then accidentally added her paternal aunt to a group chat where she refers to her mother’s side as the “fun ones.”

It looked like Clarkson could feel the second-hand embarrassment through the screen.

“You are in so much trouble … Here’s the thing, don’t lie. Just own it. Be like, ‘Look, maybe this is your opportunity to become the fun ones.’ You can’t lie. In that situation you just gotta be like, ‘Sorry, it was a turd statement. I do stand by it. Maybe let’s do something to turn it around, a family game maybe?’ You dug that hole and now you’re just sitting in it. Happens to the best of us,” Clarkson told the fan.
