Kennedy Center Honors 2021: How, When to Watch Garth Brooks, Dick Van Dyke Receive Awards

by Clayton Edwards

The Kennedy Center Honors is a special awards ceremony that takes place every year. In most years, the event culminates with a star-studded gala in December. However, 2020 was far from a normal year. So, the events took place last month. The setting and crowd were a little different than usual. They had to use a smaller venue. Also, they had to limit the number of attendees. However, some things remained the same. The Kennedy Center took an evening to honor some artists who have made significant contributions to American culture. They’ve been doing the same thing since 1978. So, at least that didn’t change.

As with most years, the Kennedy Center Honors went to a group of titans in the entertainment industry. Five recipients took home a medallion this year. Among them were country superstar Garth Brooks and iconic actor Dick Van Dyke. The violinist Midori, highly influential folk singer-songwriter Joan Baez, and all-around entertainment giant Debbie Allen were the other three honorees.

The 43rd Kennedy Center Honors had a limited crowd due to COVID restrictions. So, the vast majority of people did not get to see the event. However, you’ll get a chance to see it in its entirety this weekend. The two-hour program will air on CBS starting at 8 pm ET/PT. It will also be available to stream on the CBS app as well as Paramount+, according to CBS.

So, be sure to tune in to see those incredibly influential performers receive one of the most prestigious awards.

Other Kennedy Center Honors Medallion Recipients

The list of those who have taken home Kennedy Center medallions is long, varied, and impressive. So, to say that this year’s inductees stand among giants in the industry is, frankly, an understatement.

For instance, Andrew Lloyd Webber, master of musical theater and legendary composer is on that list. Kathy Bates, best known for her roles in Misery and Dolores Claiborne is also among those who have been honored by the Kennedy Center.

The recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors also include some of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. So, Garth Brooks is in good company. Other musicians on the list include Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, George Jones, and legendary bluesman B.B. King.

So, when you tune in to watch the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony on Sunday, know that those performers are joining some of the biggest names in American entertainment history.
