Kevin Costner Says ‘Barack Obama Has Good Taste’ for Highlighting His New Movie

by Jon D. B.

Hollywood icon and “Yellowstone” lead Kevin Costner is all about his latest recognition, courtesy of former U.S. President Barack Obama.

“Barack Obama has good taste,” the “Yellowstone” star lauds in his latest tweet. The cause? Former U.S. President Barack Obama lists Costner’s most recent film, Let Him Go, among his shortlist of 2020’s exemplary “visual storytelling.”

“Like everyone else, we were stuck inside a lot this year,” Obama begins in his tweet. “With streaming further blurring the lines between theatrical movies and television features, I’ve expanded the list to include visual storytelling that I’ve enjoyed this year, regardless of format,” the former president clarifies of his list.

‘Let Him Go’ Earns Kevin Costner Praise from Barack Obama

Within his esteemed shortlist, titled Barack Obama’s Favorite Movies and TV Shows of 2020, Obama lists Let Him Go, the latest film effort from Kevin Costner. The film, which co-stars Diane Lane, is described as an American neo-Western drama. Thomas Bezucha wrote & directed the feature, based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Larry Watson. So what made Costner say yes to another Western amidst his work on “Yellowstone?”

Two things: Diane Lane – and the script.

“I think movies are at their best when they are surprising us,” Costner says in regards to the script in our previous coverage of Let Him Go. “When they do take us someplace we didn’t expect to go.”

Being unable to predict (or set down) the script whilst reading it had Costner won over almost instantly. “They can be about so many things,” he continues. “But when I read ‘Let Him Go’ I didn’t really know where it was going.”

“And when I started to feel it – is hopefully when the audience will start to feel it. It put a lot of dread in me. But I just kept reading, because I couldn’t stop watching the couple who were in love – and were really going the wrong way.”

In addition, Costner says he and Diane Lane have wanted to work together again. Lane herself, however, was unsure of what his answer would be after time passing. Luckily for her, she quips – he said yes. Her admiration is returned by Costner, as well.

“Well she’s one of our great leading ladies – of any decade,” Costner says of Lane. “You understand why she is – She comes in with just such a point of view – it’s just easy to play with her and against her.”

Costner a Staunch Supporter of the Obamas in Return

As for the relationship between Kevin Costner and Barack Obama in particular, Costner famously campaigned for the former president during his 2008 bid.

The actor isn’t keen on seeing the Obama era of America as bygone, either. Recently, Variety spoke to Costner on politics, and whether he’d support a presidential bid from Michelle Obama as he did Barack.

“Michelle’s incredibly bright and articulate and has possessed good judgment and experience as a result. Why couldn’t she be [president]?” the “Yellowstone” star states.

Clarifying his point, Costner adds that Michelle would “have a level of interest from me.”
