The two-episode series finale airs (tonight) Thursday, May 20, at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
Allen posted a video on Twitter that featured the main cast taking their final bows. As well as summing up their time on the show and what it meant to them.
All of the cast reminisced on what they’ll miss about the show. But mostly they talked about how much fun they had working together.
“I will just take away the memory of having a great time,” Nancy Travis, who plays Vanessa Baxter, said.
“There are times when we cannot get it together (and stop laughing),” Jordan Masterson, who plays Ryan, said. “Usually if Tim is involved.”
But Allen wanted to stress that the show, while funny, was about more than laughs.
“We honor family,” he said. “We honor relationships. It’s the best of all of us. … It’s magic, and it’ll be a long time before I forget about that.”
Allen is incredibly proud of the Last Man Standing finale. It’s the only episode of the series he wrote, and he thinks it strikes the perfect balance of comedy and pathos.
“I believe we knocked it out of the park,” Allen told TV Insider. “Rather than have one where it’s sad, it wasn’t about sad. It wasn’t turning the light out at the end of the scene. We didn’t want to do any of that. We wanted to go out kind of naturally.”
Tim Allen Felt ‘Emotionally Drained’ By The Finale
Tim Allen said the finale of Last Man Standing left him feeling exhausted.
He told Parade Magazine about how the experience left him “emotionally drained.”
“It was the end of nine years and, for a guy not really that attached to these feelings except when you’re losing a loved one or a pet—and I cover that stuff pretty well … When we got to three more, it started wearing on me,” he said. “Then this ended in a gentle, wonderful way.”
Allen added that filming the final episodes of Last Man Standing were particularly hard because it was hard to separate themselves from their happy shared experiences and the sad reality that it was coming to an end.
“There have been births of children, there have been deaths of crew members and family, there have been real tough times, and all the way through it, for this big a group, it was a very close connection,” Allen said.
