Christopher Meloni Talks Relationship Between ‘Law & Order’ Characters Elliot & Olivia
During a recent interview at a Television Critics Association panel, Christopher Meloni spoke about the potential for a romantic relationship between his character Elliot Stabler and Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson.
“Sure. Hope springs eternal. I mean, why not? I think it’s going to be a collaborative effort between those showrunners for SVU and OC and I believe with Mariska and I to kind of figure it all out. It’s a complicated relationship, so we’ll see.”
Stabler and Benson previously worked together as partners on SVU before Meloni departed from the show in May 2011. Meloni also said that his erupt departure from the show caused a “very unsatisfying ending” to the Benson-Stabler saga. “I think there was always those feelings,” Meloni admitted. “Those underpinnings of feelings. That never got answers.”
Meloni then spoke about his off set relationship with Hargitay. “I don’t have that relationship with any other actor walking the earth. I’ve never worked with anyone as long as I have with Mariska.”
The duo has remained friends even after Meloni left SVU. While speaking about Hargitay’s dedication to the hit series, Meloni said, “She radiates a goodness and a warmth and an inclusiveness. You know, just a wonderful energy to be around. She’s a hard worker. I helped for the first 12 years, but she kept the SVU train going for 23 years now. She’s dedicated to what she does. She walks the walk.”
Meloni also describes Hargitay as a “good egg.” He went on to add that both he and Hargitay are honestly looking forward to working with each other on both series.
