It’s the will-they-won’t-they relationship worthy of the history books.
Christopher Meloni, who plays Detective Elliot Stabler on “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” made an epic return to the long-running franchise for his new rookie series. Before that, he was starring opposite Mariska Hargitay, Captain Olivia Benson, in “Law & Order: SVU.”
It was a reunion that fans had dreamt about since Meloni left the show in 2011.
When he returned, there has been an abundance of teasing a Stabler-Benson relationship. Both characters have crossed over to the other series. Sparks are very much flying in the “Law & Order” universe. It’s left fans not knowing how to handle the excitement and anticipation, or, for some, unhappiness for the coupling.
Pieces are falling into place for the couple in ways that were impossible back on “SVU” in 2011. For starters, both are single now and dealing with what was a very emotional reunion between the two.
Dick Wolf Talks Benson and Stabler Romance
Executive Producer Dick Wolf seems to have it all under control. However, there’s a decade of pent-up emotions, between the characters and fans watching the series. Recently, Stabler gave Benson a letter that confesses a long history of his complicated feelings for his former partner. If that doesn’t give fans hope for a future relationship, not much else will.
Dick Wolf doesn’t want people to hold their breath though. “I don’t anticipate them running off and living together as much as the audience would like that. Anticipation is the most exciting part of most relationships… the chase is always better,” he said in an interview with ET Online. Although anticipation is exciting, “Law & Order” fans have gotten plenty of that during the course of the show.
From what Dick Wolf is saying, a relationship is coming, but he’s going to make us wait for it.
Christopher Meloni Talks Potential Romance on ‘Law & Order: SVU’
Christopher Meloni and his new rookie TV series have come into the TV world with a vengeance. His character quite literally had a revenge plot in mind. Meanwhile, “Law & Order” writers were ready to take his character to an all-new level.
The impossible really happened when he returned to the franchise a decade later.
According to “Today,” Christopher Meloni teased the possibility at an NBC Universal Summer 2021 Press Tour.
“Hope springs eternal. I mean, why not? I think it’s going to be a collaborative effort between those showrunners for ‘SVU’ and ‘OC,’ and I believe with Mariska and I, to kind of figure it all out. It’s a complicated relationship. So, we’ll see,” he said at the time.
He also admitted in an interview with TVLine that it makes sense, especially since Hargitay and Meloni have amazing on-screen chemistry. “I don’t have that relationship with any other actor walking the Earth because I’ve never worked with anyone for as long as I have with Mariska,” he said.
As for the actors, both seem to love teasing fans on social media with pictures of the two posing together.
