She’s been leading the Law & Order: SVU crew as Detective Olivia Benson since 1999, and Mariska Hargitay has some ideas on what she calls the “perfect” ending to the show.
During a 2018 interview with TVInsider, Mariska discusses how she thinks Law & Order SVU should end. “With Olivia finding real peace and balance and love,” Hargitay states. She also explains that Olivia has given so much to others during the series that she would want her to fight for herself. Mariska also describes Olivia as a champion of healing and the mother figure everyone wants.
Mariska also reveals why Law & Order: SVU has been on TV for so long.
“Basically, we’re telling compelling stories that are close to our hearts, our souls, and our soul.”
Mariska Reflects on the Early Days of ‘Law & Order: SVU’
Also during the interview with TVInsider, Mariska recalls her first day on the set of Law & Order: SVU. “Keeping it real, I don’t remember!” Hargitay admits. “But I do have a million memories from the pilot.”
Mariska states that she was shocked at first with the show’s storylines and plots but decided to ground herself and be brave.
“My agent called to say, ‘I don’t know if you’ll be interested in this because it’s a very dark subject matter,” she says. Hargitay then calls Law & Order: SVU a “truly pioneering show.”
“The show is about the worst things people do to each other in the darkest part of humanity, which means many stories are difficult,” Mariska also remarks about Law & Order: SVU. She explains when there’s a child suffer situation, it hits the cast the hardest.
She then talks about the immediate chemistry with former Law & Order: SVU co-star Chris Meloni.
“From the second we met, bells went off,” Mariska proclaims. “We knew we were going to be a huge force in each other’s lives. He was intense and mercurial but also fun.”
Mariska goes on to share who is her favorite guest star on the series. “Robin Williams [in 2008]. It was being in the presence of true greatness,” she says. Hargitay then adds that Williams had a huge heart and a set photographer captured him playing with her son August.
