‘Law & Order: SVU’: Mariska Hargitay Speaks Out on Natural Onscreen ‘Chemistry’ With Christopher Meloni

by Madison Miller

Sparks are really flying over on “Law & Order: SVU” lately. And it’s not from a shootout or anything else violent, for that matter.

Instead, viewers have Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni to thank for all that energy emanating from the screen during the popular crime drama.

Fans have started to wonder if Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler may get a happy ending hand-in-hand. The two first appeared as their characters during the first 12 seasons of “Law & Order: SVU” before Meloni left after 12 seasons to pursue different interests. Meanwhile, Captain Olivia Benson has been firmly in place on the show for 22 seasons and counting.

Hargitay and Meloni Chemistry

Meloni recently reprised his role in the franchise in “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” the new spin-off series. The two have appeared together in a series of crossover episodes, but it seems like more is in store. At least, that’s what the killer onscreen chemistry seems to suggest.

That chemistry translates off the screen as well. The two actors have spent over a decade together. In the process, they have built trust and a connection that is now on a whole other level. Hargitay said it was all thanks to “a chemistry and an ease and a familiarity and a curiosity” that has always been there.

“I think we connected on so many different levels, which is really a gift with any human being. But we went through so much in the first 12 years and dug so deep and had a very full relationship and a very honest one and brave one. And we also experienced so much together for the first time that quite frankly, nobody including our spouses, really understood because we lived something and we created this baby together being ‘Law and Order Special Victims Unit,’” Mariska Hargitay said in an interview with Variety.

That connection is strictly professional and friendly, however. Hargitay has been married to her husband Peter Hermann since 2004. Meanwhile, Christopher Meloni has been married to his wife Sherman Williams since 1995.

Will the ‘Law & Order: SVU’ Duo Get Together?

The show has definitely been utilizing that chemistry between Meloni and Hargitay.

There’s been a lot of teasing that the two longtime “Law & Order” characters may start to develop a romantic relationship. While some fans are all-in, others are a little hesitant to get aboard that ship.

During the episode “The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of” in “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Stabler said “I love you” to Benson. Those words alone seemed to set the stage for something more.

“Their relationship has always been a thing. I don’t know what’s going to happen in that relationship. In (‘OC’) we have the creative space to explore that relationship, whatever it is. The show spends more time in character and relationships than the conventional ‘L&O’ shows, so we’ll get to see who they are, and who they’ve become to one another,” showrunner Ilene Chaiken said to “Today.”

It seems like something romantic is on the horizon for the two fan favorites.
