‘Law & Order: SVU’: One Star Was Frustrated Dick Wolf Took a Long Time to Respond to His Audition

When an actor auditions for a show like “Law & Order: SVU” and has to wait for a response, it can drive that actor up the wall.

Well, actor Christopher Meloni went through that situation. He recalled his audition and waiting around for an answer in a 2014 interview with AV Club.

“Good night!” Meloni said while laughing. “So I was doing Oz, and I got an audition with [show creator] Dick Wolf. I had the audition, and I thought I did very well in the room.”

Meloni said he “was very confident” after finishing the audition.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Star Was Getting Impatient Around Wolf’s Answer

“Then a couple of weeks went by, and nothing,” the “Law & Order: SVU” star said. “So I went to Tom Fontana, the creator of Oz, who happened to be very good friends with Dick Wolf, and I’m, like, ‘So, what’s up with Dick Wolf?’ He says, ‘I don’t know. I’ll call him.’ So he calls him, and he says, ‘Yeah, he liked you. He’ll call you back.’ I’m, like, “Okay, well, Jesus Christ, s–t or get off the pot!”

Meloni, who is now playing Elliot Stabler on Wolf’s “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” said Wolf finally contacted him a couple of days later.

He said “now it’s Dick and his showrunner at the time, and then…nothing! So I go, ‘Enough of this! I’m going on vacation!’ So my wife and I fly to Hawaii…and I swear to you, the tires on the jet were still hot from the landing, and I get a call saying, ‘Get the next flight back, you’re screen-testing tomorrow in New York.’ I’m, like, ‘You son of a b—h…’.”

Meloni Ended Up Getting The Part But Also Suffered Health Issue

Well, now Meloni said he flies back to New York. “I screen test, Mariska [Hargitay] and I get it, they let us know literally a half-hour afterward,” he said. But the trip back had another issue crop up for the “Law & Order: SVU” actor.

“I’m elated, and I fly back to Hawaii to be with my wife and enjoy my vacation…and I promptly have a gall bladder attack and have to fly back to L.A. the next day to get my gall bladder removed,” Meloni said. “So I might’ve gotten the part, but Dick Wolf still owes me and my wife a trip to Hawaii!”

That trip to Hawaii might be part of his new deal to appear as Stabler in “Organized Crime.” But the fact that Meloni returned to the “Law & Order” franchise is something that fans weren’t sure would ever happen. He left “SVU” and went along with his life. Yet he returned and now fans are interested in seeing what will happen, if anything, between Stabler and Hargitay’s Oliva Benson.
