The season 22 finale of Law & Order: SVU took a lighter note than many of its previous finales. But did Sergeant Fin Totula and Sergeant Phoebe Baker finally tie the knot?
The two certainly had a happy ending, but they actually decided not to get married. This wasn’t because they broke up, but just decided that they liked what they had.
Totula and Baker were introduced as a couple in the later seasons. Now, the rock-solid Law & Order: SVU couple shows a rare example of a healthy, happy couple in a procedural. For many fans, it would be sad to see that end. Even Elliot Stabler, who formerly worked with the SVU team, showed up at the wedding only to find out that it had already been called off.
In a May interview with TVLine, showrunner Warren Leight said he wanted this season finale to be a change of pace. Not only that, but he values having Totula and baker on the show.
“It’s always bugged me that everybody in all cop shows comes from, or is in a dysfunctional relationship or is not in a relationship at all. So we just wanted to have somebody be in a good relationship for once,” he said. Even if the two eventually decided to call the wedding off, it’s clear that they’re doing what they want for their relationship.
Elliot Stabler’s return was a nice addition to the episode for many. Now, Stabler’s the lead in his own spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime.
‘Law & Order: SVU’ had a ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ Crossover
SVU and Organized crime recently had a crossover event. The episodes saw Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni, reunite with Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Stabler was Benson’s partner on the show for the first 12 years. This was before Meloni decided to leave the show. The writer’s room explained his exit by having Stabler retire.
Meloni was brought back for his new show years after his exit. The show, Law & Order: Organized Crime centers around Stabler getting back into the force after his wife was killed in a car bomb meant for him. He and Benson initially reunite by chance at a crime scene. Now, the two have truly reunited, sharing a moment together at the wedding where they cheers to ‘partners.’
What’ll happen next for Bensen and Stabler is hard to say, but many Law & Order: SVU fans are excited to simply anticipate more reunions whether they come in the form of solving cases to clinking glasses at almost weddings.
